Happy New Year to all my connections! Hope the year has gotten off to a good start. In the spirit of recapping 2023, I want to share my most fulfulling moments of the year. At various intervals in 2023, I spent time on the continent, specifically Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana with Black Girls In Tech Nigeria hosting a series of events and outreach programmes: We began by hosting two hackathons, where we gathered over 70 young women to work together to building solutions that could change the landscape of continent. We then had the had the privilege of engaging with the vibrant community of Lagos and working alongside VAHT (Visit a Hospital Today) to support their noble mission of providing quality healthcare to those who need it the most. Here's a glimpse of what we achieved: 1. Oworonshoki Outreach: We visited Oworonshoki, a low-income community in Lagos State with a population of approximately 170,000 people. Working alongside VAHT, we provided free medical services, including blood pressure tests, sugar tests, malaria tests, consultations, and medication. 2. Modupe Cole Disabled Children's Home: We had the honor of visiting the Modupe Cole Disabled Children's Home, where we donated essential items to children in their care. 3. Supporting the Differently-Abled: We extended our outreach to a community in Yaba that caters to the blind, deaf, and crippled individuals. We provided them with provisions and clean water, ensuring that they have the resources they need to thrive. 4. Feeding the Hungry: Through the services of a local seller, we managed to provide over 228 people with nourishing meals, making a significant difference in their lives. 5. We donated to the Ketu Outreach program where malaria nets and medicine were given out to members of the community Black Girls In Tech Nigeria are also patrons of CMS Nursery & Primary School, Bariga, Lagos and we had the honour of donating school supplies as well as a 100 uniforms and school bags. As part of our patronage, we also sponsored the Red House now known as Black Girls in Tech house at their 39th Annual Interhouse Sports Competition. Finally, we also had the privilege of partnering with BecauseSheCan and hosting our first 'Tap Into Tech' event in Ghana at the Google office. It was great to share my tech journey with aspiring women who will no doubt be part of the the tech ecosystem in the near future. I'd like to thank the team at BecauseSheCan as well as Abi A. for facilitating this endeavour I'm looking forward to doing more work to foster the entry of Black girls and women into the tech space at a global level. If you'd like to partner with me at Black Girls in Tech or Black Girls In Tech Nigeria for speaking engagements, hosting events, conducting outreach or even donating laptops, please reach out to me at naomi@blackgirlsintech.org
