Paradox and turning point. While sustainability and participation are absolutely key buzzwords in public policies, thousands of people in Canary Islands have to take the streets to call against overtourism. #tourism

Food for thought: We need to rethink #tourism. Thousands of demonstrators in Canary Islands demand changes to the model of mass tourism which is overwhelming the Atlantic archipelago. #Innovation in Tourism has to follow the path of #ecosustainability and #socialsustainability. In the meantime when travelling abroad we can make the difference with more conscious choices. https://lnkd.in/dSNjbHPF

💡 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 is experiencing transformative times. Increasingly local and with the need to respond to challenges of an increasingly broader nature. In a paper published in 2022 by Emerald Publishing's Worldwide Hospitality and Tourism Themes, I discussed the need for local DMOs to adjust their roles by widening the scope of their activities beyond the management of the visitor economy, where they traditionally operated. These recent movements in the Canary Islands demonstrate that this need even reaches destinations where tourism has never been (until now) questioned. 💡The lodging mix available in the destinations is at the core of some of the challenges posed by overtourism, as Barcelona protests, similar to other Spanish and world destinations are witnessing, as summer holidays season comes upon us. 🇪🇸🌍As the city deals with the effects of #overtourism, tensions rise, and residents' frustrations become evident. The measures being taken to address the impact of mass tourism are tackling the root causes of the discontent and aim at a harmonious coexistence between locals and visitors. 👉 Read the analysis in Bloomberg Línea https://lnkd.in/dmdSkM54 #travel #tourism #dataintelligence #TravelTechnology #Mabrian

I do not agree at all with the methods employed by these protestors in Barcelona, but they raise an interesting and relevant point about tourism saturation and sustainability. Since study abroad is in some ways, an offshoot of tourism, how long will it be before protestors target American study abroad students, especially those who show no willingness to learn the local language? I saw this in Cuba last month with Americans studying Medicine in Cuba without having to learn Spanish and thus, behaved boorishly. When will we learn? https://lnkd.in/ePfFeNhG #globalthought #intled #intleducation #internationaleducation #studyabroad #educationabroad #tourism #sustainability
BBC News Mundo on Instagram: "🇪🇸 ¡Turistas váyanse a sus casas! Es la frase que coreaban miles de personas en Barcelona en contra del turismo masivo. Durante el recorrido, algunos manifestantes increparon a los turistas echándoles agua con pistolas y precintando las puertas de restaurantes y terrazas. Denuncian la situación insostenible para los residentes por el aumento de precios y piden un “p

Professional of spatial planning looking for innovative projects on sustainability, smart cities, environment and citizen participation
This Tuesday I participated in a very interesting conference focused on #tourism and #cities, organized by Aethnic "Jornada Turisme i Ciutat per un model regeneratiu socialment responsable". We searched for a socially responsible regenerative model of this sector and the round tables covered, among others, challenges of urban tourism in times of climate emergency, challenges of tourism in terms of creating inclusive cities and the new model of tourism in Barcelona which takes into account the needs of the local neighbourhoods. What would you say, is Barcelona a #touristic or #touristificated city? You can have a look on a short video from this event here: https://lnkd.in/ejSc_qxQ #inclusivecities #climateemergency #socialresponsibility
