As I prepare for trial, or periodically for general retraining, I re-read the amazing book "Running with the Bulls" by Courtney and Nick Rowley. They suggest brutal honesty with ourselves about whether we truly know our clients and connect with them.  Here’s some of their insightful questions: 1. Do you know the names of your clients’ parents, children, and close friends? 2. What were their childhoods like? Do you know their favorite family vacations? Favorite holiday memories? Favorite childhood friends? 3. Where did they meet their spouses? How did they fall in love? 4. What do your clients’ daily lives look like? What are their hobbies and interests? Are they sports fans or movie buffs? What are their favorite things? Where do they find joy? 5. What are your clients’ talents? What are they truly good at? Are they insightful friends, talented athletes, or gifted musicians? 6. What are your clients’ faiths or spiritual practices? How do these affect their daily lives? Do your clients’ beliefs affect their thoughts on a lawsuit at all? 7. What are your clients’ biggest fears about the future? 8. What do your clients hope for and dream about happening in the next twenty years? 9. What are your clients’ biggest regrets? What are their proudest moments? 10. If your clients could get one thing out of their cases and walk away, what would it be? Why? 11. How do your clients feel about their injuries? Is there anything positive to be gained from the way they’ve been harmed? What would make them whole? 12. How do your clients view the defendants in their cases? What are their feelings about them? 13. How do your clients feel about money? What are their fears and internal beliefs about value? These questions are designed to gain a deeper understanding of our clients, their lives, and perspectives.  In turn, it gives us purpose behind what we're fighting for, and can lead to uncovering context clues to prove your point and bring justice for your clients. #lawyer #law #lawfirm #success #personalgrowth

Yesterday, I did a thing… The Great Big Legal Offsite (GBLO) unearthed a once-in-a-species opportunity…🤯 Yes, you read that right! And I'm sorry, not sorry if your LinkedIn feed has been full of GBLO posts today and yesterday. If you're still reading to this point and have no idea what I'm talking about, here you go… Yesterday, we witnessed an incredible gathering at the inaugural Great Big Legal Offsite (GBLO), and I'm utterly overwhelmed by the support and messages of encouragement that have poured in since. The offsite was a roaring success, and I couldn't be prouder of the legal community we've built together. A special thank you to all our inspiring speakers who shared their invaluable insights. Piers Linney, former Dragons' Den investor, delivered a particularly powerful message, reminding us that AI is not just a once-in-a-generation opportunity, nor a once-in-an-industrial-revolution opportunity, but a once-in-a-species opportunity. This profound statement has certainly left us all pondering the vast potential and responsibility that lies ahead. Kush Birdi also left a lasting impression, urging us to not just be lawyers, but to be the authors of our client's personal stories. He emphasised the importance of working with empathy, truly understanding what's important to our clients beyond the legal aspects. This shift in perspective is crucial as we strive to build deeper, more meaningful relationships in our practice. This event is a testament to the power of collaboration, being your true self, authentically showing up, and the overarching power of community.
