The World Health Organization estimates that more than 1.3 billion people experience disability (15% to 20% of the global population). Almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life. Exciting Leadership Opportunity! We’re seeking to bring together self-advocates, family members, as well as staff from disability service providers and care coordination organizations to share lived experiences and develop actionable DEI strategies for New York State’s provider system.    Through a grant from NYS Council on Developmental Disabilities, AHRC Nassau is partnering with WRI Solutions, New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation, and National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) to build regional teams focused on DEI strategy development and implementation, aiming to elevate care quality and establish DEI best practices within their organizations and throughout New York State. Applications just opened after this week’s NY Alliance Conference, where a presentation on the project was given by Sarah Gonzalez Noveiri Ph.D. and Bridget Cariello of AHRC Nassau, Jackie Hayes of NYS CDD, Nicole DamaPoleto of NASDP, and Marissa Italiano and Darlene Ward of WRI Solutions. Engagement : Lessons from The Voice Engaging with fellow workers can be hard but ultimately if you get it right the benefits will follow. Every year I groan when The Voice comes on the TV. Not again surely and then one week later I’m usually captivated, urging the coaches to press their buzzer. The great thing about the initial stages of the show is that judgment is made by purely listening, engaging and reflecting. There is no glitz or glamour to be fooled by. Do you really listen ? I don’t. Often I pick out the phrases or moods I want to see and not the ones that are really important. This brings me on to the subject of disability. Studies show that businesses prioritizing diversity and inclusion in their workplace outperform their industry peers. Yet, many companies get stuck trying to figure out where to start. The aging and disability networks are made up of local, state, and national organizations and committed advocates working to support older adults and people with disabilities. Accessibility isn’t just a buzzword, It’s a critical driver of success. But businesses tend to overlook the needs of their disabled employees. In fact, according to a recent Forbes article and study, 25% of employees who were surveyed stated that they have a disability or health condition that limits activities of daily life. The four key things I took away from the SXSW Sydney conversation led by Lee Simpson of whiteGREY: Elevating Disability with Dylan Alcott (and friends) 1. 1 in 5 people in Australia live with disability, 90% are non-visible. Thats 4.5 million people. 2. 20% representation is important. Too far becomes tokenism. 3. Fear of offending is a barrier, progress is better than perfection - “have a crack” because timidness to engage, drives discrimination & creates bias. 4. Lived experience is critical for decision making. Co-creation is key. We can’t and shouldn’t create solutions/experiences for people with disability without their guidance (throughout the journey). True accessibility will be seamless when we create it together. 5. “Call in, not out”… Don’t shame those trying: Help guide and teach. 6. The bare minimum should be radical change.
