The global space economy is burgeoning in scale, diversity of actors, funding sources, and innovative applications of frontier technologies. The days of a few incumbent primes in defence, telecoms, and aerospace working with national space agencies are diminished, displaced by scores of ‘new’ incumbents, ventures at all stages, and many new national space ambitions. ‘Space’ has foundational ties to earth-based jurisdictions and is largely still viewed by strategy scholars as a ‘new market’ in terms of familiar issues of growth, competition, the sources of firm advantage. This work on ‘market entry’ increasingly misspecifies the practical activity of building markets in and for space commerce. We at Vsquared Ventures are not necessarily known for our events, but we thought it was about time to gather the #European #deeptech ecosystem and give the stage to the dreamers, visionaries and doers who are building the future as well as to discuss how it can develop further. Why we asked the co- founder of abberior to give a keynote, even though it was very important for him when he founded his company, to do it without investors, specifically without #VentureCapital? Because this day was not about us but about what it takes to create something entirely new, even though people doubt you and tell you that your plans are “physically impossible”. What it takes to bring groundbreaking science and technologies on the road and build a successful company, and what we all have to do, to make Europe the leading deeptech powerhouse globally. We are fully aware of the challenges but equally aware of the opportunities, so let’s focus on the stuff we can influence through our actions... we have plenty to do! Did you know? ❓ 🌍 🛰 Earth observation satellites provide the world with more than half of all climate change data – and some of that data can come from nowhere else but space. They also provide over 90% of weather data, which the Bureau of Meteorology uses to give us our daily forecasts. In Australia, Earth observation data is also critical for supporting agriculture, fisheries, mining, land and water policies, bushfire response, and national security needs. In 2020, the economic benefits of Earth observation data were estimated at over A$2.4 billion. With more and more Earth observation data becoming available with greater resolution, accuracy, and availability there are increasing opportunities to unlock its value accross many industries critical to our nation and economy.
