Now I’ve spent fifteen minutes trying to figure out when the primping table got the name “vanity” and whether that name was supposed to be funny or critical. I'm proud to officially announce a new employee-inspired action from WorkInProgress, which has the goal of increasing diversity and inclusivity in the advertising industry. It’s called Opening Shot and it provides opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to shadow professionals on an actual shoot. https://openingshot.org/ Why? In addition to hiring more diverse candidates, we need to inspire more people from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue advertising as a career in the first place. Many people don’t even learn about advertising as a profession until later in life, if at all. And if they do, it’s too mysterious or daunting to pursue in earnest. We aim to change that. And what better place to get excited about our industry than at a shoot? A microcosm of all the talent, creativity, and collaboration that makes advertising so damn fun. Over the past couple of years, Opening Shot has been in beta with our launch partner, Domino's, with three incredible people attending Domino's shoots all over the country, and a fourth joining us in just a couple weeks. WIP and Domino’s have committed to sending three more people to shoots this year. But Opening Shot was never meant to be a Domino’s and WorkInProgress thing. From the beginning, we’ve wanted it to be a platform that many clients and agencies can participate in by pledging a shoot or shoots and bringing new wonderful people along for the ride. This piece resonates with me massively. As somebody who has lived proudly on both sides of the coin, the lack of diversity around social-mobility in the comms and creative industry as a whole couldn’t be more real. I recall a brainstorm in my early career where a wonderful colleague from an upper middle-class background noted that ‘people on the estate in Warrington wouldn’t like the idea’. She was right. The idea which was layered with assumed insights and tensions that reached only the lower middle class at best wouldn’t be liked, because it wouldn’t have resonated. In this instance, if she’d have gone one step further with ‘Let's explore what people in [insert town] like / be impacted by / resonate with’, she’d have had a winner on her hands. Instead, the target audience was ignored and the campaign fell flat. My personal background (proudly from the ‘estate’) combined with working in a largely middle-class industry are the reasons I’m so passionate about social-mobility and inclusivity from this POV in our industry. With so many of us representing FMCG brands that are driven by the working class consumers investing in them, we absolutely need more representation across the board to ensure we’re representing our brands in the most impactful way. So there I was, fresh from the whirlwind of McCann NYC, landing with a bit of a thud in London, 2008. The transition from bustling ad scenes to, well, a career pause wasn't exactly what I'd call a soft landing. The job market was as inviting as a closed door. Fast forward to my first big client meeting in London. To say I was a bundle of nerves is an understatement. I was so jittery, I resorted to fidgeting with my pen, desperately trying to find my client-speaking groove. And then, as if to add a dramatic flair to my anxiety, the pen exploded. Ink. Everywhere. It was like a scene from a comedy sketch, except it was my life. The meeting took a nosedive, and so did my confidence. But, you know what? It was in that inky mess that I realised we're all just human. Even clients. There's this illusion of perfection we chase after, but real life? It's far from perfect. That day, covered in ink and embarrassment, I think I became more human to my clients. And somehow, that disastrous meeting turned into the foundation of a strong, successful working relationship. It was as if letting my guard down and showing my vulnerability made me more relatable, more trustworthy. When our client L'Oréal rolled out their #WorthitResume campaign, it struck a chord with me. It was a reminder that our mess-ups, our not-so-fine moments, are often where we shine the brightest. Or, at the very least, where we learn the most. Now, when I present, I keep my hands free – no pens to betray me. I've embraced my story, ink stains and all, because sharing these moments can help us all be a bit more forgiving of our flaws and fearless in the face of new challenges. So, here's to the mishaps, the blunders, and the beautifully imperfect journey. It's through these #proudfailures that we truly grow. The first quarter remains a challenging landscape for the box office, but amidst the turmoil, there's potential for salvation—a sandworm (no not the popcorn bucket). 🍿 Production disruptions persist, impacting the early-year pipeline. This week, major studio releases returned, injecting much-needed energy over Valentine's and Presidents Days. Yet, despite this push, the box office was negatively influenced by lukewarm audience reception. 🎶 Leading the pack was ‘Bob Marley: One Love’, claiming the top spot. While the Paramount Pictures film delivered strong opening numbers, pre-release hype helped to create momentum, but overall, the number was slightly impacted by some dampened audience enthusiasm. 🕷️ Similarly, ‘Madame Web’, a Sony Pictures Entertainment production in partnership with Marvel Entertainment, faced its own share of challenges, experiencing poor reception even in the lead-up to its release. Despite efforts to pivot marketing strategies, including leveraging Paradigm Talent Agency’s talent Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in ‘Anyone But You’, the film fell short of expectations, particularly among comic book/MCU enthusiasts. 🙌 ‘The Chosen’ continues to exemplify a well-executed release model. The third batch of episodes for Season 4, from Angel Studios, maintains steady performance, showcasing the effectiveness of strategic release planning. 💡Looking ahead, there's a glimmer of hope on the horizon with two highly anticipated films poised to make a significant impact on the box office: Warner Bros. Entertainment ‘Dune: Part Two’ and DreamWorks Animation ‘Kung-Fu Panda 4.’ These movies are expected to deliver robust opening box office numbers, offering a potential boost to this quarter's performance.
