The top performers in the world rest STRATEGICALLY. Try this ten-minute exercise to fight burnout: I love this breakdown by exec coach and conscious leadership coach Dave Kashen breaking down these 4 zones of performance at work: Performance Zone Survival Zone Burnout Zone Renewal Zone Kashen recommends trying to stay between your performance and renewal zones. Professional athletes are incredible at balancing between these zones. They know that can give it their all in a performance because they know how to recover and recuperate before their next race, game, etc. When they transition to other professional domains, they are successful because they continue to prioritize the balance between these two zones. After 20+ years in business, I’m only now learning how to build a balance between renewal and performance. When I was early in my career, I didn’t understand the difference between these four zones so I was constantly getting stuck in the burnout and survival zones. HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR RENEWAL ZONE At Inflection retreats, often people want to talk about burnout and how to create a better life for themselves. To help them identify their values and what matters to them in their daily life, I walk them through this ten-minute exercise: Spend ten minutes writing down the answer to this question: “If you had no constraints, what’s your ideal Tuesday from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to sleep?” This exercise helps people identify their values and what can keep them between the performance and renewal zones. I renew by taking walks, doing midday workouts, having great nutrition and taking breaks from screens. I also intentionally surround myself with people who remind me to renew. If you can’t determine what you need for renewal, ask the people around you who love you because they probably know. Takeaway Figure out what brings you renewal and schedule those rest activities into your day. Treat the renewals just as sacredly as the performances. Rest wisely. Rest more. I love the diagram in this video. We hold on desperately to performing and keeping going which is ultimately exhausting. But peppering rest in allows us to keep going in a sustainable way.

Excellent share, Matt! It's hard to turn around these days without bumping into someone suffering from burnout. Your "ideal Tuesday" exercise is gold!

I accidently have done this for years. Crack it hard very early working a bunch of emails and updates then go chill, hot tub or another coffee and some worship music pray/meditate - then go run some business errands - then chill go get some late breakfast around 1:00 - bit a bunch more emails and calls. Then hit the gym around 3:00 - head home more music and meditation then home make dinner eat - then do some tie up take for the day - then Netflix and maybe a glass of nice red wine.

This is a beautifully simple model, thank you Matt. I will use it. Two quick questions. 1. What are some favourite rest zone rituals or routines you've come across? 2. How might the model be applied to groups working together, as well as individuals? Is there a group rest ritual?

This is a great breakdown, Matt Schnuck. Understanding the four zones of performance has been a game-changer for me, especially in avoiding burnout. Your exercise on envisioning an ideal day is a practical way to identify what truly matters for personal renewal. Incorporating regular breaks and physical activity into my day has significantly boosted my productivity and well-being.

Equal importance to "work" and "rest" [in-between work]. Well said. Ensures best outcomes at work 👍🏼 The pitstops are as important as the race itself.
