Another special moment in the books! Sam Chason and I had the opportunity to talk about Storage Scholars LLC's growth story these last 8 years on Fox Business Network yesterday. Going live in front of a big audience is intimidating. What questions will they ask? What if I say something stupid and piss off a big group of people in my life? What if we come off as arrogant or ungrateful? I'm thankful that we were asked a question that I feel qualified to speak on. "What advice would you give to college entrepreneurs out there?" Sam and I answer this question more than all others combined. In fact, every time we speak publicly or to a class of students, we center our presentations around one message: Just get started and let time under tension do its thing. It's okay to look stupid at the beginning, and it's okay to be wrong. Find a group of people who are also willing to put themselves out there to start a business and learn from each other's mistakes. When starting a business, many young entrepreneurs blame their lack of success on their competitors. Spending more time blaming others prevents you from addressing your shortcomings. Taking hyper ownership of the problems in your business is the only way to grow. Your competitors aren’t the reason you’re losing.

Scared of starting a business? What’s the biggest fear? That people will judge it for it not being good? Here’s the secret. If the business is not good, nobody will see it anyway and they almost certainly won’t care. It would actually have to be doing well for people to take enough notice to begin hating on it and judging it. Think about it. It would make for a pretty awkward conversation if someone wanted to talk shit about your business when it’s just a podcast with 140 listeners and 12 total likes.

What vs. Why.  The entrepreneur world is built around making meaningful connections. Starting as an outsider can feel intimidating. The best way you can break into these connections is to stop asking “What do you do?” and start asking “Why do you do what you do?”. Learn more about that person's internal mission. What makes them tick? If they’ve already made lots of money, what keeps them in the game still? When they start to give these nuggets of wisdom, be a great listener. You might be surprised how much people seem to like you when you get them talking about themselves in a unique way.

We often tear ourselves down when we aren’t good at things instantly. I believe most successful people take hyper-ownership and understanding of whatever stage they’re at for a given skill. I use the framework below to identify where I’m at with specific skills. Unconscious Incompetence - You don’t even know that you suck at something yet. This stage is blissful but foolish to stay in the long term if you are looking to grow. Conscious Incompetence - We’re now aware that we suck but are starting to take steps to improve in that domain. This is the “eat-shit” phase where you do things that aren’t “worth it” or “is beneath you” and the results are poor. Successful people attack this stage with repetitions, knowing they will likely be bad at the activity they’re pursuing. Conscious Competence - Once you’ve done enough inputs in the “eat-shit” phase where you get a successful outcome, you can start to understand what you did to succeed. To do it again well, you’ll have to be intentional and follow the steps that you did to win the first time. Unconscious Competence - You’ve done something so many times you could teach a college course on the topic. It’s like clockwork and there’s no thought involved. It’s just running the playbook you know by heart, again and again and again. Before you get upset with an activity you’re pursuing or a skill you’re learning, ask yourself what stage you’re at? Is it reasonable for you to be upset or do you just need to spend a little more time in your current stage?

Do you live to work? Or work to live? Were we put on this earth to work? Or is work just an activity that allows us to live out our true purpose? I believe we live to work but work doesn’t always mean ‘income-generating activities”. Fitness is working on the body and the mind. Improving your relationship with your significant other is working on your emotional intelligence and patience. Writing or journaling is working on self-expression, reflection, and creativity. Even socializing, playing, and resting, are crucial because they allow us to come back recharged for the things that fulfill us the most. Our work.

As humans, we always feel like we have something to prove to someone else; to show that their doubts about us were just that. If you do something to prove your doubters wrong, there’s a low chance it will feel as good as you thought it would. Example: Do we believe the tech founder who started a successful software company is going to feel better about themselves if they show up to the high school reunion to boast to their old bullies? Probably not. If you have something to prove to yourself though… Taking action to prove your internal hater wrong can alter your brain chemistry to be more fulfilled, and confident, and it feels better than you could’ve guessed. Example: Observe how someone changes over the course of their first 6 months of working out regularly. It’s nothing short of incredible to watch their confidence soar in front of your eyes. How do we know they were doing it for themselves? They wouldn’t have made it the whole 6 months if they were doing it for someone else.
