Flashback to October 2022! Who remembers the incredible Million Dollar Smiles Charity event? 🎉 REAL MG had a table, and let me tell you, tickets sold out faster than we could blink! It was an absolute honor to be a part of such a meaningful cause and to witness the generosity and compassion of our community firsthand. 💖 Together, we made a real difference for the Million Dollar Smiles Association, and that's something to be incredibly proud of! Whether it was through our presence, our support, or our contributions, each and every one of us played a role in brightening the lives of those in need.  But you know what's even more remarkable? It's the power of unity and collective action. When we come together with a shared purpose and a shared passion, there's no limit to what we can achieve. To all the companies, professionals, and leaders wanting to acknowledge Juneteenth… My Chicago-based non-profit, Free Root Operation is hosting its third annual Plede Your PTO Campaign. You can pledge to donate your paid time off in the future or make a contribution today! This campaign is my brainchild and is a way to make a TRUE difference this Juneteenth by supporting my work to provide wellness and economic development resources to Black moms and families who are descendants of enslaved Africans. We’re raising $100,000 to create a Chicago where all of us feel safe. Your contributions will support over 1,800 moms and women registered for our BLOOM Network programming. It will allow us to achieve: 🏢 Our first 3,500 sq ft brick-and-mortar space for programming and operations 💜 A new Care Team of licensed professionals providing critical wellness services 🧘🏾♀️ A new Programming Team of educators providing robust trainings and experiential support 👦🏾 A direct service team providing childcare and transportation services to make our programming accessible in innovative ways I founded FRO when I was a teenager. I have been doing human rights advocacy for nearly a decade. My work has taken me from the South side of Chicago to the United Nations to University of Pennsylvania I have channeled my Ivy League education and international platform to create an impact on my block, in the neighborhood I grew up in. Why? Because I believe in the power, brilliance, and agency of my community. We know what we need to be well. These goals were created with the needs of Black women, moms, and families at the center. In late March, Congress decided on the nation’s budget and narrowly avoided a government shutdown. With pushes from activists 50+ like you, lawmakers saw your letters and we scored wins that deserve celebrating: For Social Security, we won a $100 million boost in funding for the Social Security Administration. This boost will help start to address long call wait times for Social Security hotlines and delays on disability claims! Family caregiving programs — which support people who care for an aging parent, spouse, or older loved one — will get a $2 million boost in funding! Tomorrow is Juneteenth, and I would like to provide non-Black allies with an opportunity to truly celebrate the holiday. I’m calling on you to turn your paid time off for Juneteenth into reparations by donating to my non-profit Free Root Operation. We have over 1,800 women in our service base who expressed a NEED for our wellness programming. With your help, we can make a change in their lives and the lives of their children and families. If you can’t contribute, sharing this post is also impactful! Your contribution will allow us to expand our BLOOM Cohort: a six-month wellness program providing moms and women with 10 hours of individual counseling, 3 family counseling sessions, over 20 wellness events, and 60 hours of in-person support. BLOOM has been proven successful and improves the ability of moms to be even more effective parents, community pillars, and stewards of safer communities by giving them the wellness and economic development resources to care for themselves first. I would be remiss not to re-center the descendants of enslaved Africans within Juneteenth, a day marking when people learned they had been freed two years prior, on June 19th, 1865. Juneteenth is not just a federal holiday, it is a call to action to reconcile with our history. We celebrate by doing better. Our goal this year is to raise $3,600 in honor of 36 years of women-identified storytellers at Hedgebrook and challenge our supporters to surpass last year's record of 35 donors.
