It’s happening! After months of preparation, the first National Child Care Innovation Summit cohosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation takes place this Thursday 🌟! Hundreds of businesses, policymakers, innovators, funders, and providers from over 40 states are coming together to put childcare on the national economic agenda. Headlined by Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and US Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark, we couldn’t be more thrilled about the lineup of speakers joining us! From CEOs of large companies like UPS, Etsy, Suffolk and Micron to small businesses entrepreneurs like Alson Farms and Red Rooster, we’ll hear from businesses taking action on child care. From White House officials and Members of Congress to Governors, Mayors, county officials and chambers of commerce, we’ll learn about how policy reform and innovation is increasing access to child care both federally and in small urban and rural communities across the nation. We are excited to shed light on the movers and shakers leading investments, innovations and public-private partnerships addressing child care challenges on the ground. They consider how the private sector can be a force multiplier to the public sector in making care infrastructure investments and moving forward public funding for child care. They design for the toughest use cases, such as non-traditional hour workers, child care deserts, and families who require diverse supply options. And they are making inroads to recognizing the immense importance of care jobs by providing better wages, benefits, opportunities, and support. While there is still much work ahead, this summit hopes to provide an opportunity for many to take the first—or next—step towards forging a working care system. Each year, over 100,000 people in the US die from preventable overdose. Despite decades of overwhelming research demonstrating the effectiveness of methadone for decreasing overdose, less than a quarter of those who need it, get it. Last year, Noa Krawczyk organized the first "Liberate Methadone" conference, which brought together 800 people to discuss and exchange ideas on how to improve access to and use of methadone to reduce the harms of chaotic opioid use. This report is a result of that work. From reproductive rights to sexual violence and from the realities of lack of child care access to the role of ai in paid leave, you are truly consolidating moms into a community and force for change.

Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced our preliminary agreement with Micron to provide $6.14 billion in grants and more than $7 billion in loans, which will unlock an additional $100 billion in company investments in upstate New York and $25 billion in Idaho. The investment will help onshore a significant amount of leading-edge memory semiconductor production and support the construction of two leading-edge Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) fabs in Idaho and New York. In Clay, NY this includes creating the largest amount of cleanroom space ever announced in the United States - the size of nearly 40 football fields. Together these investments will create about 20,000 jobs between New York and Idaho; help launch robust workforce training programs; bring significant investments in childcare such as the building of two large facilities in Idaho and New York; and help solidify commitments to 100% renewable electricity with the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Excited to share that I joined Secretary Raimondo at the White House yesterday for the announcement of the first National Childcare Innovation Summit. Led by the U.S. Department of Commerce, together with our partners at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, we are putting childcare at the center of the economic agenda. The summit will highlight and explore childcare solutions, including creative care models and policies, emerging employer approaches, and public-private partnerships that can help address the crisis. It will showcase and encourage action by the private sector as a partner and force multiplier to the public sector in establishing child care as critical infrastructure. When I first started working on childcare as an economic issue, it was quantifying the problem that motivated me. Childcare is the quintessential market failure and so much talent, business, and local growth remains restricted due to this crisis. But there wasn't enough data at the time to show the extent to which childcare was foundational to our economy. Five years and a pandemic later, we've come a long way in recognizing childcare as economic infrastructure. But now that we get how great of a problem it is, it is the solutions that drive me. Policymakers, entrepreneurs, employers and investors across the nation are working to expand and reimagine our care system, and that's some of what we hope to highlight. And a personal note - it feels impossible to believe that my mom isn't here to see this moment that she saw me work towards these past years, but I know she'd be so proud that we've come this far. This is for her and all the caregivers in your own lives, whose work and life decisions are so often unseen but who carry our economy and the world on their shoulders.
