“About 1 in 7 kids in Louisiana experience parental incarceration, nearly four times the national average,” says Dominque Jones-Johnson, MSHRE, founder of Daughters Beyond Incarceration. “DBI believes those closest to the problem can be the solution. Since May 2018, we’ve mentored more than 70 girls impacted by parental incarceration in New Orleans by turning pain into purpose through organizational programming and policy initiatives.” Learn more about their work:

Come join our team! The Kresge Foundation's Social Investment Practice is seeking a Director of Portfolio Management to oversee our ever-growing portfolio of impact-first, program-related investments. This director role reports to me and leads a team of two other professionals all focused on ensuring that our portfolio of existing investments continues to perform exceptionally well and delivers the impact we seek on behalf of our investees. We are first and foremost seeking a candidate with a deep and proven commitment to social impact and who desires to use their financial management skills to serve low-income people. We are looking for an experienced leader with a high attention to detail, and preferably someone with experience in community development finance or program-related investing inside a private foundation. This is largely an internally facing role but also critically important in ensuring the success of Kresge's long-term program goals. To be clear, this position has no role in managing our endowment nor is this a role that will lead to originating new transactions. It is an ideal role for someone who loves problem-solving, enjoys getting into the weeds of transactions, and is committed to supporting and developing their team. Relocation to metro-Detroit is required although Kresge operates a hybrid work schedule. Join us! https://lnkd.in/g78syUJx

The U.S. Department of Transportation and Kresge recently co-hosted a two-day convening highlighting the importance of including community voice and vision in the implementation of President Biden’s Investing in America-funded projects. The Roundtable featured conversations at the intersection of infrastructure, health equity and environmental justice. The historic levels of federal infrastructure investment have created opportunities for place-based organizations to work alongside federal partners to convene and create spaces for authentic engagement and collective problem-solving, where community and government can join together in search of lasting solutions that ensure infrastructure can be a catalyst for positive change.

In clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and schools, nurses see the health impacts of climate change firsthand. Nurses are well-positioned to provide reliable, evidence-based information on both in a world awash with misinformation about health and climate change. In this op-ed, Katie Huffling, executive director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, highlights nurses' unique role in tackling the climate crisis and how funders can tap into their power. https://lnkd.in/eq_vtKqJ

How are climate, food, culture, housing, self-determination, wellness and prosperity all connected? That's what a group of funders learned on a recent neighborhood-based learning tour by Coalition of Communities of Color in Portland, OR. Using a multi-pronged approach led by the stories and experiences of communities most impacted by climate change, CCC recently won a campaign to pass aseries of bills in Oregon that include reduced energy rates for low-income households, funding for home energy efficiency upgrades, and the 100% Clean Energy Standard, which requires utilities to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. In recognition of the importance of supporting the financial health of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Kresge has made a $4.25 million investment to the Reinvestment Fund’s HBCU Brilliance Initiative. The Initiative is structured to resource HBCUs with knowledge, loan capital and credit enhancement, while building the capacity of HBCUs to attract and retain permanent assets that promote sustainable institutional prosperity. "Due to chronic underfunding, we need more CDFIs to step into investing in these critical community partners. The HBCU Brilliance Initiative is an excellent model for how other CDFIS can make reoccurring and ongoing investments in HBCUs.” - Kresge Social Investment Officer Erika Brice #HBCU #HBCUs

The inevitable but infuriating backlash against guaranteed income programs is gaining steam. The backlash is fueled by the same insidious canards to which we have become inured, but which have been unequivocally debunked: that cash payments are simply wasted on non-essential expenditures and encourage people not to work. Backlash against genuine, evidence-based policy change that promotes the economic mobility of people of color and people with low incomes. More than 100 guaranteed income pilot programs that give low-income residents monthly cash payments have been implemented across the U.S. Mayors for a Guaranteed Income (MGI) report that independent research on pilot programs shows that when given unrestricted payments, recipients are able to rise above the barriers of poverty and create economic stability for themselves, their families and their communities. https://lnkd.in/deWmASeF The documentary “It’s Basic,” documenting the lives of families who have participated in the St. Paul, Minnesota, pilot program initiated by Mayor Melvin W. Carter III, details the innumerable ways it has helped set families on the path to economic stability – paying for child care, car repairs, clothing, and other items that provide that small, but essential, support for families to weather daily impediments to holding a job. https://lnkd.in/dRjtX9ij
