It’s disheartening to witness Central Government’s in Africa neglecting their fundamental responsibilities, leaving crucial civic duties to NGOs, philanthropic organizations, and Old Students alumni associations‼️‼️ Amidst the staggering misappropriation of billions in £, $, ¥, € the burden falls unjustly on these entities to fill the gaps and support communities‼️‼️ This trend not only undermines trust in governance but also perpetuates inequality and stifles sustainable development‼️ It’s imperative for governments to uphold their obligations, prioritize transparency, and work collaboratively with civil society to ensure equitable progress and accountability for all citizens ‼️‼️ #citizendevelopment #governments #alumni #lionsinternational #rotaryinternational #corruption

The #Humanitarian sector is very vast, I do not have enough experience to say I fully understand it, but I have learned a lot over the past year. In this sector, we have the following major actors like; • #Donors • #UN Agencies • #Governments • #INGOs • Local NGOs Depending on which organization you work for, you may have a different view of the system and will therefore act accordingly. We all need to understand that some of these organizations have “business models” and procedures that govern them which as an outsider, we may not be aware of. Many Local NGOs see INGOs as donors, this is not true, INGOs also seek for funding to implement their projects except for a few that also have core funds like Plan International. In this light, INGOs seek for local NGOs to act as implementing partners for their projects, this is only done when funding is available. A spontaneous request for #funds from an INGO no matter how genuine it is will not receive any positive reply unless a prior partnership was established for a project. UN Agencies are not donors either, even though the UN funds local NGOs as well as INGOs, their funds are often from Government bilateral sources, they also have Resource Mobilization Officers who work towards this goal. As for governments, we could say a government gets its funds from taxes and other sources of government revenue, however, for humanitarian projects, the funds are mostly from agreements with other governments, bilateral and multilateral organizations like the #WorldBank, #IMF, #ISDB, etc. There’s still a lot to dig up, but I think it is important to know where your organization falls in this ecosystem in order to determine what actions and strategies are most appropriate for resource mobilization and goal attainment within your own context. Solutions to resolve these challenges involve fostering partnerships, advocating for streamlined processes, and diversifying funding sources. Challenges Facing Local NGOs and Funding in African Crisis-Affected Countries Limited Financial #resources : Local NGOs often face financial constraints, limiting their capacity to implement programs and respond effectively to crises. Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex administrative procedures and regulatory requirements can hinder the ability of local NGOs to access and utilize funding efficiently. Impact of Crises on Funding Sources: Crises can disrupt traditional funding sources, leading to uncertainty and instability in financial support for local NGOs. Solutions to Resolve the Situation Fostering Partnerships: Collaborating with international NGOs, government agencies, and private sector partners can provide local NGOs with access to additional resources, expertise, and funding opportunities. Advocating for Streamlined Processes: Local NGOs can advocate for simplified administrative procedures and regulatory frameworks to facilitate the efficient disbursement and utilization of funds. In conclusion, addressing the challenges facing local NGOs and funding in African #crisis-affected countries requires a multi-faceted approach, including fostering partnerships, advocating for streamlined processes, diversifying funding sources, building capacity for resource mobilization, and engaging in advocacy and networking efforts. These solutions can contribute to strengthening the resilience and effectiveness of local NGOs in addressing crises and supporting sustainable development in the region.

Direct cash transfers can help fund local organizations and better respond to challenges. But it requires breaking up with top-down approaches. In my most recent for Devex, I spoke with Caroline Teti from GiveDirectly and @Abdullahi Bularafa from Mercy Corps about the potential of direct cash transfer - including a promising pilot of universal basic income in Kenya - and what is preventing international NGOs and implementers from moving the needle. Ultimately, it looks like funders still need to be willing to let go of power and lead from the bottom up. Today, UNDP is pleased to announce a significant milestone in our work in Cabo Delgado Province. The #GovernmentofGermany has signed a contribution agreement of 10 million euros for the #Stabilization Programme. The support from the Government of Germany is crucial. It will be instrumental in implementing activities that enable community security and access to justice, the rehabilitation and construction of key infrastructure for access to basic services, and the creation of livelihood opportunities for those impacted by the conflict. Our collective goal is to immediately stabilize and recover the province of Cabo Delgado. In partnership with the #GovernmentofMozambique and the generous donations from the #EuropeanUnion, #Japan, #Netherlands, and now Germany, we are paving the way to strengthen state presence and social cohesion in the districts most affected by the conflict in Cabo Delgado.  Together, we are implementing durable solutions for the sustainable development of Cabo Delgado. #UNDP #Germany #CaboDelgado #StabilizationProgramme

'Keeping the lights on' isn't an optional extra. So why aren't we putting it up front in our funding proposals? Excellent article featured in Bond UK's Network News from Oxfam's @Dominic Vickers. He points to how we can 'reframe partner ‘overheads’ as an investment in making localisation effective.' We need to clearly and transparently communicate the investment required for partners to succeed. And that means a compelling presentation of the '...donors now agree on the importance of paying partner overheads and indeed want to play their part in effecting change.'
