Long overdue, I've been wanting to feature a wine from 1848 Winery. 1848 refers to the founding of the Shor family winery (now Zion), with the deepest roots of any winery in Israel. As I've covered its history in the past, I won't rehash it, still it's always important to note. The 1848 label was started in 2006 by 8th generationer, Yossi Shor, just as the Shor family's wines were starting to gain recognition for their quality, but setting itself apart from the larger-scaled commercial Zion Winery with higher-quality, handcrafted wines. 1848 employs Ilan Assouline, the French-bred, Bordeaux-trained winemaker, and the well-known agronomist, Pinny Sarig. The winery is boutique, producing about a quarter of a million bottles annually.
1848 produces wines appropriate to the region, including Argaman (Hebrew for crimson), a crossing of Souzão and Carignan, and now native to Israel. Argaman was created specifically for its rich color, and is produced in great quantities in Israel. It spent most of the previous decades being used as a blending variety for its depth of color but recently has become noticed for its own quality.
1848 grows Argaman in the Galilee, with its volcanic plateau soils made up of volcanic tuff and basalt stone.
The 1848, 5th Generation, Orient, Edom, 2021 is a blend of 38% Marselan, 32% Argaman, & 30% Syrah, varieties suited to Israel's Mediterranean climate, aged 10 months in small French oak barrels. Marselan is a French cross of Cab and Grenache, most famous in Languedoc, and another deeply-colored variety. Syrah in Israel is, too, dark and brooding, with a spicy character. So it's no surprise this wine is dark and inky in the glass. On the nose, ripe black and red fruit: blackberries, bramble, sweet black cherry, red plum, jamminess, sweet oak, cassis, black pepper. On the palate, dry, refreshing high acidity, medium, silky tannins, full-bodied, long enjoyable finish. Here is a wine that is New World and balanced. Ripe fruits with a great acid backbone, good structure, and dare I say it, elegance. Well done.
