Check out our new blog: PUBLIC TRANSIT - IMPROVING HEALTH AND HEALTH EQUITY WHILE FIGHTING CLIMATE CHANGE "...A new modelling study estimates that Canada could double public transit ridership and reduce climate emissions by 65 million tonnes (MT) by 2035 if federal and provincial governments worked to expand transit service, install bus lanes, encourage more housing density near transit, and purchase zero emission buses..." "...A number of modelling studies have demonstrated that public transit investments can result in significant health benefits by reducing air pollution..." "...Transit use increases physical activity because most transit trips begin and end with some form of active travel..." "...Public transit makes roads safer for all users..." "...Public transit can increase health equity by providing greater access to different services and opportunities..." "...Public transit can also save people money..." Brisbane residents have the lowest access to frequent, all-day public transport of all major Australian cities, according to a report released today. The Climate Council report shows less than 34 percent of Brisbane residents have access to regular public transport, well behind Sydney (67.2 percent), Melbourne (52.5 percent), Adelaide (47.6 percent) and Perth (40.5 percent). Climate Council Head of Policy and Advocacy Dr Jennifer Rayner PhD GAICD said more than 7 million Australians living in the five biggest cities didn’t have access to frequent, convenient and reliable public transport options (defined as every 15 minutes between 7am-7pm and within 800m of their homes). Dr Rayner said this stopped Australians choosing to use public transport more often, a form of transport that could slash living costs and climate pollution at the same time. 👏 We’re delighted Matt Towner, Programme Director of our Health Effects of Air Pollution programme, was quoted in Forbes this weekend: “We are at a crossroads... “We can either choose a future where a person’s air quality is not determined by their postcode, income, or ethnicity. Where children aren’t hospitalised with respiratory conditions due to toxic pollution. And where we can safely walk or cycle through green, quiet streets. In short, we can choose to prioritise the health of people and the planet. “Or we can let our towns and cities be overwhelmed by the congestion that pollutes the planet and our lungs. “This report shows we have the tools to... ☁️improve air quality 🌲lower greenhouse gas emissions 🌍and improve lives. All we need now is the will to implement these policies and to do so fairly." https://lnkd.in/eUt8gH65

Is it time for Auckland to consider a #congestioncharge? "Auckland’s new public transport plan seeks to increase patronage by 50% in the next eight years, with more low-carbon travel, but falls far short of what the city’s own emissions reduction plan requires. The Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP) has a goal of 150 million boarding's by 2031, but the council’s Transport Emission Reduction Pathway (TERP) says a target of 550 million will be needed by 2030." #auckland #Emmisions #NewZealand

We have worked with a number of Local Authorities gathering essential monitoring data on low traffic neighbourhoods and similar schemes which were implemented during and post covid. The data we have collected from both pre and post implementation of LTNs and similar schemes has shown a reduction in traffic, not only within the area but in the surrounding roads also. This has led to an increase in active travel as well as better air quality. Whilst the Government is looking at a review into these schemes, the data speaks for itself and is a critical part of the UKs commitment to reach net zero. The climate emergency will impact us all regardless of how you currently travel and therefore, we need to stand together in delivering change and reducing emissions. #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods #ActiveTravel #AirQuality #NetZero #data #dataanalysis https://lnkd.in/eKnyzerN
