I saw this quote this morning and gave it some thought. I don't see myself as smarter than my parent's generation or think I am wiser than my kid's generation. We can change and do things differently as time goes on. We have more tools to learn with. We can make decisions quicker and more accurately. In some cases, we look at things differently, not better or worse, just different. Keep an open mind to change and the world looks a lot brighter. Bring value to the next generation and allow them to show you the value they have in return. Exceptional talent leaves good companies when they choose not to recognize what they have. It's an epidemic in current corporate culture. When Chris Ray and I started Revenue Rocket, we wanted everyone to feel like, and be treated like an owner. The natural thing is equity, right? The uncomfortable thing about equity is that it only has value if there is some massive event. An exit, an IPO, etc. Not to say that it isn't valuable, but it doesn't guarantee tangible value. Do what is best for your clients... It sounds so simple, right? It is a concept one of my closest mentors taught me during my time at Goldman Sachs and Jordan Park Group. This was a founding principle for the vision of Matter Product Studio. It is a key pillar for achieving success in a service business. Over the years, this vision has expanded. When we help everyone win... our whole community wins. There’s a bigger plan at play. How do we do this? Remove greed. When you create win/win negotiations, everyone will win if you succeed. ⭐ Aligning incentives is the secret. Day 6 of 8 leadership tips I gleaned in an interview I did with Jack Bogle, for a CNBC story back in 2015. Jack founded Vanguard, one of the most important American companies in history, a $7.2 trillion asset management company that is shareholder-owned and that brought the costs of investing down for middle-class Americans. He advocated for index investing for everyday investors to build wealth, a strategy that today’s robo advisors use to good effect. I’ve interviewed many leaders over the years. My observation is that they get stronger as they age, often because they’ve lived through a health crisis or one in their family. Confronting your mortality is hard, but it gives you reserves of courage, patience and perspective -- and you need all three to be a great investor. Patience is essential, and it can be practiced. “Leaders do need patience, of which I have none,” Bogle said. But he was forced to practice it at a few points over the years. The long process of cutting the ties with Wellington and founding Vanguard was, he said, “nine months of pain and struggle.” When he started Vanguard in 1975 with $1.4 billion in assets, much of the financial services community called indexing Bogle’s Folly. Malkiel remembers an early board meeting where one of the other directors said, “We’re hemorrhaging cash.” The company struggled until 1981 to find its footing, even fighting with regulators for the approval of its fund model. The early fights didn’t deter Bogle. Burt Malkiel, the famous economist and author of Random Walk Down Wall Street, was an early board member. He remembered, “What Jack did was to say, ‘We’re on the right course, and stay the course.’ I knew Jack believed this in his heart of hearts.” Twenty years later, in 1995, Bogle’s heart failed, but only literally. “I drew deeply on all the patience, persistence and courage I could muster, as anyone would when, in 1995-96, I endured a 128-day hospital wait, on life-saving intravenous fluid, before receiving a heart transplant,” he wrote in his classic book, “Common Sense on Mutual Funds.”
