I don't 100% agree that the consumer 5G didn't deliver. There are use cases in eMBB (and spectral efficiency) and FWA that many of us are benefitting today. Maturity of XR (AR/VR/MR) will come in later stages depending on ecosystem. However, I definitely can agree to the private5G momentum. A very good interview by Telenor TCO Amol Phadke in the TM Forum on #SovereignCloud. We all know that the telecom revenue isn’t moving in the same direction as what 5G growth has anticipated. There are however potential with some telcos starting to turn the business around as well. If only we can do a CTRL-C and CTRL-V across the 10,000s carriers worldwide but unfortunately it is a industry known with many silos and legacy infrastructure. That’s why the concept of “delayering” comes in, for a more agile, more open, and structure it to do-what-you-do-best in InfraCo, ServCo and NetCo. I echo what Telenor CTO said, “there are growth everywhere but if there is something near to your core business, you have a higher chance of success”. AI is promising, however questions of regulatotion and compliance around it are raised more each day. The sovereign cloud will be something to look at, and who else is better place when it comes to regulation and compliance – the telecom industry at its core business. It is not just highly regulated (that also plays a factor on why OTT constantly eat into their market share), it is also an industry that understands the local compliance and already own existing infrastructure of data center and networking/fiber. #FocusOnYourCore #SovereignCloud #TMForum

Earlier this year ABI Research forecast an accelerated convergence of communications technology (CT), information technology (IT), and operations technology (OT) to the forefront driven by cloud and edge computing. Key to that is for technology providers to work strategically to drive demand and adoption of this converged platform. It is becoming evident that every technology that surrounds us today is software driven or define. Time to market is essential to beat competition, hence #IT and #OT convergence is nothing but inevitable. But let's not forget that there is a #CT component as well. With stringent requirements in latency and time sensitive networking, mobility, security, device to device communication, isolated communication (LAN), the communication technology continue to evolve to support these convergence. Communication Technology existing in any industry/enterprises are not new, from the days of analog communication like the DMR, FM, to digital ones like GSM-R, enterprise LTE, WiFi... and then of course #3GPP Rel-16 onwards introduced updates and features to support the deployment of #Private5G. Take for example in the case of #manufacturing. Rel-16 introduces 5G LAN feature that can manage the grouping of IDs and make them into virtual networks (VNs). It allows isolation of multiple physical networks, e.g Wi-Fi network, the wired LAN for production, and Wi-Fi network for office work. The #5GLAN also supports cross segment Layer 2 and Layer 3 communication without the new of additional routers, which is key as PLC devices around the factories communicate via later 2 while 5G supports only later 3 communication. Another example is the Time Sensitive Communication (#TSC) in 3GPP Rel-17, enabling 5G to support any application, essentially an upgrade from the IEEE Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) from Rel-16 used as the main protocol for factories today. This will support the deployment of private wide area networks (WANs) which are relevant to industry in #logistics and #ports. There is never a lack of use cases. It's out there from automation to railway and manufacturing, mining, utilities and basically anything from sky to anything underground. There is also not a lack of technology and I believe Private 5G will be the perfect digital convergence. great progress on OpenRAN. #fromarticle: Vodafone aims to have 30 percent of its masts based on Open RAN technology by 2030 in Europe and is already deploying the technology commercially. This includes 2,500 Open RAN sites in the UK, the first large-scale deployment in Europe, as well as in Romania.

Australia were among the very first few to deploy the 5G network, now ranked third in 5G connected devices per capita. Billions of dollars were spent and we never fail to consume every capacity that was built. Both India and China leads the 5G SA traffic with India, US and Singapore deploying it at a full nationwide scale. Jio Reliance is said to have built it inside one year. Quote from the slide by infinera, for every min of internet - 694,000 YouTube were watched, 2.4mil google searches were done and 11k fake Facebook accounts were removed! In other presentations, 5G, AI and Cloud is now the new foundation layer of networks, and we see it across many speakers today that AI will only burst traffic further. On B2C monetisation model, Ericsson reference a performance-based business model, ensuring no charges if performance metrics aren't met, measured per second. Meanwhile, Allot highlighted the potential of CSP bundling security, a trend gaining traction in Europe and the US, boasting attachment rates of >40%. In between shutting down of 3G communication system to talks of 6G architecture, 261 telcos across 101 countries has launched 5G services, with only 47 of them deploying the 5G Standalone architecture. What’s next for telecom and here’s my write up for #networks and #communications in the month of March. 1. Broadband comes “HOME” Fiber (FTTH/FTTB) take up rate continues to grow, in developed countries across US, Europe and Asia where fibre broadband lines now pass almost 70% of the 349 million premises in Europe #21Mar. Fiber density and rollout are pivotal in enhancing our quality of life and enabling edge use cases. Keep talking about CloudRAN, but first get the fiber to the edge. Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is rapidly gaining momentum, emerging as a primary revenue stream for telcos deploying 5G. Reports from OECD indicate that the global FWA market share has reached 3.7% of total fixed broadband subscriptions #14Mar, while a mature 5G market in the US has now captured 7% of the total broadband market #7Mar. Telcos in Australia continues to increase their revenue through FWA as well. Satellite technology is also making waves in the HOME broadband arena. Telstra's launch of Telstra Satellite Home Internet, in collaboration with Starlink, leverages Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity, supplemented by 4G backup coverage #25Mar. 2. AI in 6G With the NVIDIA GTC Conference in full swing this March, we won’t run away from the buzz word of AI. NVIDIA's foray into the telecom space is evident, from joining the AI-RAN alliance at MWC to unveiling their 6G research cloud platform #19Mar. The idea is to apply AI into RAN (of course, a domain that accounts for 70% of telco CAPEX), a platform that enable simulation, testing and training of AI models into RAN stack. NTT DOCOMO's is said to be the first to launch GPU-accelerated commercial 5G network, late last year via the Nvidia Aerial platform. 3. Dark side of Telecom Data breach affects every industry and telecom is not different from it. Unfortunately four months into this calendar year, we have seen a few data breaches from AT&T impacting 73 million subs #30Mar, Chunghwa Telecom where 1.7 TeraBytes of data that included government contracts stolen and sold in the dark web #1Mar.
