Recently, I attended an industry dinner in NYC, organized by Teneo, featuring a former Fortune 500 CEO as the guest speaker. One of the speaker's key themes really resonated with me and was somewhat counterintuitive. Historically, the CEO's job was to grow a business and if profits increased, nothing else really mattered. In recent years, that view has shifted, and stakeholders - employees, clients, community members - increasingly want to know where business leaders stand on key social issues. More than ever, it's important for CEOs to "take a stand." While taking a stand comes with risks, the risk of offense can't be a reason not to take a stand. From global war to civil rights to democracy itself, issues that we thought were long settled are suddenly up for debate. When these critical issues hang in the balance, saying nothing simply isn't an option. As Rev. King said, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
