Do you ever ask yourself, “How do I get to specialize in a specific area of law?” Here’s my advice. Before you can be what you want to be, you have to be firm on what you won’t be. You’re defined as much by what you don’t do. A big case lawyer by definition doesn’t handle little cases. And if you still handle little cases while you hope to get known as a big case lawyer, you don’t have the time to do what big case lawyers do on their cases. And every time you appear in court, you get further away from the specialty you want to be known for. This is true no matter what the specialty is. If you want to be known for something, then do that! And don’t do the other things. It sounds too simple. Is it? What do you think?

This case was turned down by so many lawyers that the family almost gave up. But they didn’t, because little Samantha Gonzalez was so badly hurt that they knew that needed to keep fighting. The Gonzalez family found K|U. It took almost two years for our team to expose what was going on at the manufacturing facility in China: one of the most devious corporate cover-ups in history. The factory had been using the wrong size part in the safety mechanism of a pressure cooker. Once they discovered the mistake, they fixed it on future products but did not recall the old ones or notify the authorities. As a result, little Samantha had disfiguring burns to her face and body and suffered the partial amputation of all four limbs. The factory almost got away with it. But we didn’t let them. They ended up paying one of the largest settlements in history - $27 million. Money that will help Samantha with the best prosthetics, and the most advanced, state-of-the-art, cutting-edge technology. We founded our law firm with the idea that it would be different. We wanted to have the time to work on important cases, hard cases. These cases take an insane amount of time, so it meant turning down most of the work that came to us. That was scary...but there was no other way to be the firm we wanted to be. One upside we didn't anticipate was that the most amazing people wanted to work on cases like that, and so they wanted to work with us. Not only the most talented legal professionals, but also people who were kind, considerate, and loyal. Not only the kind of people you wanted with you when you were fighting a tough battle but also the kind of people you wanted in your life. One of the funniest things that happened, and something I’m most proud of, is when one of the paralegals on our team, with a lot of experience, said... “It’s almost as if this is a law firm.”
