Last week was a celebration of #Ogilvy75. It was reunion of giants - A David Ogilvy “Ogilvism”. I had the opportunity to revisit stories about how we all got to Ogilvy. I never met David Ogilvy, I got to know why his name, image, likeness and ideaLs live beyond. My story…in 2008 I was leaving Sears trying to get back to Austin, TX to be with my family because I was commuting weekly to Chicago from Austin, TX. Asten Morgan Jr. Introduced me to carol watson at headhunter at the time. Carol asked me if I would be interested in agency side at Ogilvy . I thought my time had passed, meaning I was on the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) career path and pivoting to the agency side this late in my career path was not an option. Flash forward Charles McKittrick hired me into his emerging consulting group that later became Ogilvy Consulting way before the other strategic consulting groups entered the advertising space. What I didn’t know at the time, my hire was part of a master plan designed by John Seifert (former chief executive officer) and Donna Pedro (former chief diversity officer). Could a “none traditional, later stage talent elevate within the industry?” It was at Ogilvy, I was asked “If David Ogilvy were here, what would the agency and industry look like?” That was a “Giant” question that literally changed the course of my life. Under the leadership of John and Donna, a group of us co-founded #OgilvyCulture, challenged the “general market” and “multicultural marketing” model and formed the industry’s first “cultural” practice. In 2015 I left Ogilvy, wrote a book and started Reframe to help Marketing and HR professionals build inclusive experiences at scale. Essentially answering the GIANT question. If David Ogilvy were here what would the agency and industry look like. I’m on my journey to help accelerate inclusive change and growth at scale. Ogilvy taught me three key things I try to exercise at Reframe. Writing is key to documenting thoughts and thinking for how to lead others. Second, start with the giant question and you can solve the giant problem, whether a creative and/or business problem. Last, hire giants to solve giant problems. Your ex-Ogilvian, filled with passion and dedication, is eager to return home to Ogilvy UK 🇬🇧 This is a girl who had her dream to work for a leading, legendary and aspiring agency like you in 2016 & she was so lucky that she got a chance to do that in India! 🇮🇳 Having been a part of the Ogilvy family in India, she cherished the values and spirit that Ogilvy embodies. The journey led her to the UK, fueled by the dream of continuing this inspiring journey with Ogilvy UK. Because once an Ogilvian, always an Ogilvian. And that was her belief in her and her Ogilvy Community. And little did she know that it doesn’t work that way. Your company/employer only believes in their existing people and people who are working with them at the present, and once they leave, they forget you completely. So, still keeping that hope in her heart, and the fire 🔥 burning within her, she starts to apply and approach Ogilvy Ogilvy UK Ogilvy and hoping that someone would open the door and welcome her back home! Looks like I missed everyone at this gathering. Was a short time for me, but super formative. Still amazed at all of the talent I met walking those halls. Glad to see most of us are still fighting the good fight. Thankful for all of the lessons learned. #Ogilvy75.
