In #7 of Zag’s Mobility Leaders: Women Making Moves series Institute for Transportation and Development Policy CEO Heather Thompson explains how urban planning has long revolved around men’s transport needs and sets out how to avoid a repeat in the Global South. For over a decade, Heather has worked with the ITDP to build transportation into the “backbone” of cities through mixed-use urban planning which serves more than just a “man’s commute home from work”. “When you actually look at the people moving around in a day and using these systems, most of them are women with different transport patterns. Instead of going from home to work and back, they’re going to multiple locations. They take their children to school or care centres, they’re often caring for their parents, taking them to hospitals, going to grocery stores. It’s many more small rounds and yet our transportation systems are not organised around those small trips." Read more: https://lnkd.in/e4TdPSk4
