France has shocked the world. Despite predictions, left-wing parties clinched a majority in parliament. And the predicted right wing sweep was defeated. If you're feeling optimistic after democratic/left-wing gains in France and the United Kingdom this week, you should be! It's a good indicator that the doom and gloom folks (like me lol) might be proven wrong about the inevitable rise of fascism worldwide. We are at a turning point in history in 2024. Let's keep the arc bent toward justice, democracy, and equality. 🌎💕 More about France: They don't have a clear majority coalition, so it may take weeks to get a government and prime minister in place. Meanwhile, the Olympics are happening. I'm not the biggest fan of snap elections. Are you? Picture from the BBC. #elections #worldnews #France
There's nothing promising about the "Labour" victory in the UK. Keir Starmer's policies are indistinguishable from Maggie Thatcher's: austerity, public sector cuts, low taxes on the wealthy, cynical foreign policy. This "Labour" Party will give the British far right an opportunity to roar back in the next few years. At some point they'll get a more telegenic leader. One that doesn't appear to be the result of 1,000 years of inbreeding, and they'll threaten to succeed.
The problem the USA is making is Biden isn’t a centrist. He is a right winger running against another right winger in a competition to see who can be the more appealing xenophobe. Trump’s got that on lock, Biden can’t compete, although he does try. Words have meanings and left populism is the only counter to fascism. Centrist mediocrity won’t motivate voters to get to the polls.
Polls mean nothing and people should stop taking pundits as gospel, despite “fake news” becoming mainstream. I don’t know if the left and center in America will forge a temporary alliance to stop Trump but I do know that when talking about snap elections, replacing Biden this late would carry more risk than reward.
Well people like you keep the issues up and help elevate the solutions that address the cause. So doom and gloom plus pragmatism and pointing towards goals is likely part of why we are holding back the worst possible outcomes. Thank you.
What happened was that the left engaged in a strategic partnership with the center to defeat the right. Left wing candidates dropped out of races in order to give centrists seats that might have otherwise gone to the fascists. The center should be grateful, but they're already acting like the left is being "uppity" for expecting to share power after they engineered an electoral feat that saved the Republic.

2wI feel a little bit of hope that we have a chance this November, without devolving into civil war. Just a little bit, but more than I did two days ago.
