Carl O'Brien 's article in today's The Irish Times sets out the stark reality of underfunding in higher education. The gains made over the last two years have been wiped out by a failure of government to provide sufficient funds to cover the cost-of-living pay increases agreed under Building Momentum. Class sizes will increase further - they're already among the highest in Europe - and small group tutorials and other essential supports to students won't be possible unless the funding crisis is dealt with. The Irish Universities Association Pre-Budget Submission sets our clearly what needs to be done and we urge the recently appointed Minister Patrick O'Donovan TD to take action to ensure that our growing student population get the quality of education that they deserve. Employer representatives, Ibec are fully supportive of the need to invest in higher education and research in order to secure the future high-skills talent of the country. The €307m funding shortfall identified by Government in May 2022 has been exacerbated by a failure to provide sufficient funds for national pay awards agreed by Government. Almost all of the extra €100m provided over the last two years under Funding the Future has been eroded by an under-funding of pay awards, leaving universities materially short of funds to pay existing staff. In the Pre-Budget Submission the IUA is calling for: 🔴A €92m supplementary budget in 2024 to cover the costs of existing staff; 🔴A further €171m in Budget 2025 to continue covering existing staff costs; 🔴At least €120m additional Funding the Future allocation. This would still leave almost one-third of the €307m funding gap after three successive budget. ➡ Read submission: https://lnkd.in/eZ_VPhj8 Patrick O'Donovan TD Fine Gael Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Jim Miley Orla Feely University College Dublin Linda Doyle Trinity College Dublin Daire Keogh Dublin City University John O'Halloran University College Cork University of Galway Maynooth University University of Limerick Technological University Dublin

Did you know today is Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day? A day to recognise the significant role that SMEs play in the global economy, crucial for economic growth, job creation, and innovation. Universities highly value their partnerships with SMEs, collaborating to enhance staff training and upskilling through flexible courses like MicroCreds and pathways such as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Additionally, universities work closely with SMEs on student placements and co-creating courses. These initiatives advance the learning material to ensure graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge that meet industry needs. #SMEsDay 🔗 https://lnkd.in/edAM3Zba

Hugh Brady knows a thing or two about higher education. He runs Imperial College London which has just been voted #2 university in the world by QS World University Rankings He previously ran University of Bristol after a hugely successful term as President of University College Dublin So, when he tells us that the Irish universities are "financially stressed" and "falling badly behind" their European competitors, we should listen. His Irish Times interview is a sharp reminder to Taoiseach Simon Harris and his government that a failure to provide the necessary investment in Irish higher education is a serious risk to future economic success. It is, he says, "mission critical for future competitiveness of the Irish economy". His advice to ramp up investment now in Irish higher education should be heeded by Ministers Patrick O'Donovan TD and Paschal Donohoe The Irish Times editorial clearly reinforces the argument. https://lnkd.in/ednueX_9 Irish Universities Association Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science University of Galway University of Limerick University College Cork Technological University Dublin Dublin City University Trinity College Dublin Maynooth University
