“It’s the reason I decided to work here.” For Donna Mollett, deposit quality supervisor, tuition reimbursement is helping her complete a milestone that's been years in the making. “I started my education journey a long time ago and didn’t finish,” she says. “So I had a goal; I have to finish. Previously, when I had reimbursement through a workplace, it was just fall and spring. Here, they split your funding so it’s available for the summer, too.” That mattered to Donna because she could pace herself. Since 2018, she’s worked full time in our deposit quality assurance department, earned a supervisory role, and continued to balance online classes every semester. She started with an associate degree from Butler Community College. In December, she’ll graduate with a bachelor’s in business administration from Emporia State University. “I work with a lot of people who are still wanting to continue their education or wanting to go back,” she says. “I’ll talk to them about the program and encourage them to look into it. When you’re taking classes, you’re not only learning, but you’re bringing that knowledge back and applying it to your job and passing it on to your team.”

In English, it translates to “remember your worth,” and it was one of many memorable themes for Silvia, INTRUST loan specialist banker, as she volunteered for the third of three CREATE CAMPAIGN INC - Spark Community Business Academy sessions hosted at our downtown Wichita office in April and May. The sessions were part of the Spark en Español program, business training led by Spanish-speaking volunteers for a cohort comprised entirely of Spanish-speaking entrepreneurs. “As volunteers for the Simulacion de Negocios — or business simulation — session, we acted as customers going through contract negotiations with the entrepreneurs,” Silvia says. “They’d visit with us about their services and pricing, and we’d counteroffer and play out the scenarios in new and challenging ways.” By the end of the session, the takeaway was clear. “Alejo Cabral, the program director for Create Campaign, emphasized that you’ll have customers who counteroffer with lower amounts than you’re willing to take for the services you provide,” says Silvia. “Don’t sell yourself short.” Thank you to our executive team and employee volunteers for hosting Flujo de efectivo (cashflow), Simulation de Negocios (business simulation), and Contabilidad (bookkeeping). Creating a financial forecast and budget is fundamental to managing cash flow for a small business. A financial forecast can help you estimate expected revenues, expenses, and cash flow. It should be based on historical data such as sales figures, inventory information, expenses, market trends, and other relevant factors. You can use your financial forecast to build your business budget, which serves as a detailed projection of cash inflows and outflows for a specific period. At INTRUST, leadership is an activity, not a position. We introduce this concept through LEAD INTRUST, an in-house learning session we offer and encourage our employees to take when they have time. “It’s a space for employees to refine and evaluate ways to work through adaptive challenges they’re currently experiencing,” explains Danny B., learning and development coordinator. An adaptive challenge is a problem, issue, or opportunity where you don’t have the information you need or a checklist you can follow to help you work it through. Using resources from the Kansas Leadership Center and the book ‘Your Leadership Edge,’ the learning session teaches the concept of adaptive leadership, equipping participants with the tools and framework to accurately diagnose and move through these situations. “We guide them through ideas that can help them navigate adaptive challenges they face in their work,” Danny says. “We see that this helps our employees lean into adaptive challenges when needed, which ultimately leads to a higher level of leadership capacity across the bank.”

Luke W. is a banker at our Overland Park, Kansas, banking center at 133rd Street and Antioch Road, and his path to a banking career might surprise you. He was an actor and a waiter in L.A. for 17 years before he and his wife decided they needed a change from working 50-hour weeks to make ends meet. In early 2019, they searched online for the best places to live and work and agreed on Overland Park. "I sold my car to afford to get us here, and we moved," he says. "I had my college degree, motivation, and lots of customer service experience — that's it. So, I started the job hunt." Ultimately, his impressive customer service skills helped him land the job at INTRUST. “The bulk of my job as a banker is customer service,” he says. “To me, there’s an artistic side to it. It’s learnable. It’s one job made of a thousand smaller jobs, and if you have the desire to learn and do those jobs well, then you got it down.” Luke's been here five years, and we're so glad he chose to be part of our Kansas City team.
