Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) has signed an agreement with state-owned JSC Uzbekhydroenergo to explore the feasibility of several pumped storage hydro projects in Uzbekistan. “Pumped storage hydro can support the rapid adoption of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, with a stable, reliable storage solution that can operate at utility-scale,” Masdar said in a statement. “According to the International Hydropower Association (IHA), pumped storage hydro accounts for over 90% of installed global energy storage capacity and it estimates pumped storage capacity could reach 240 GW by 2030.” Uzbekistan has a target to deploy 6 GW hydropower capacity by 2028, up from the current capacity of just over 2 GW. Uzbekistan is also targeting 7 GW of solar and 5 GW of wind capacity by the end of 2030. Masdar has a number of clean energy projects in Uzbekistan, including 1.4 GW of wind and solar projects that were connected to the grid last December. Masdar also recently signed an agreement to develop an additional 2 GW wind project and deploy battery storage systems with a capacity of 1,150 MWh across five existing projects in the country. #cleanenergy

There are 600 million people without access to electricity on the African continent, which is surprising given that the continent has nearly untapped potential for solar energy (11 TW), abundant hydropower (350 GW), only 5–6% of which is being used, wind energy (110 GW), only 2% of which is being used, and geothermal energy (15 GW). This means that Africa has 39% of the world's potential for renewable energy, more than any other continent. In order to achieve sustainability and provide every one of the continent with access to clean energy, we need to put effective solutions and measures in place. #equalenergyaccess #renewableenergy #energyforall

#Romania is preparing to allocate EUR 815 million (USD 886.5m) in grants to incentivise investments in #solar, #wind and hydropower production across the country. The energy ministry said on Thursday it will launch two funding calls in March, disbursing funds from the #EU’s #ModernisationFund. The first funding round, amounting to EUR 415 million, is directed towards renewable energy projects wherein a minimum of 70% of the generated energy is intended for self-consumption. As much as EUR 190 million of the budget will be allocated to solar power initiatives of over 1 MW with a cap of EUR 500,000 per installed MW. Solar projects of up to 1 MW will be supported with EUR 170 million, with grants capped at EUR 1 million per MW. Wind power projects will receive EUR 30 million, with disbursements limited to EUR 700,000 per MW. A further EUR 25 million from the funding package will go for hydropower, with maximum payouts capped at EUR 1.805 million per MW. The competition is open to micro-enterprises, small or medium-sized enterprises, as well as large enterprises. The second initiative, valued at EUR 400 million, will allocate a total of EUR 200 million, with maximum grants capped at EUR 500,000 per MW. Additionally, both wind and hydropower facilities will receive financial support packages of EUR 100 million each, with maximum disbursements set at EUR 700,000 and EUR 1.805 million per MW, respectively. The guidelines for applicants are now available for public review, and potential recipients are encouraged to provide feedback to enhance financing guidelines. The goal is to enable the initiation of tenders on March 1. Once the tendering process commences, interested parties can submit proposals within a ninety-day period. The selected projects are required to be finalised within three years from the date of signing the financing contracts, but no later than December 31, 2029. https://lnkd.in/dJjXRjz3

Southeast Asia targets 18 GW of pumped hydro by 2033: According to projections from Norwegian consultancy Rystad Energy, Southeast Asia’s share of pumped storage hydropower is set to increase nearly eightfold in less than a decade – from 2.3 GW today to 18 GW by 2033. Rystad’s figures say that there is currently 2.7 GW of pumped hydro storage under construction, while the remaining 13.3 GW is in various stages of development. #Renewables #Energy #Technology

#TasNetworks Annual Planning Report 2023 was released a couple of days ago. The report clearly indicates that #Tasmania aims for 100% renewable energy-sourced electricity self-sufficiency and has set a target to deliver 200% of its 2020 baseline renewable generation by 2040. The proposed Marinus Link is a 1,500 MW capacity electricity interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria comprising two 750 MW staged cables. As anticipated, the report mainly highlighted the use of Tasmania’s existing and expandable renewable energy resources, including large-scale renewable hydrogen production, including EV uptake, as guided by the Tasmanian Renewable Hydrogen Action Plan. Hydro Tasmania's Battery of the Nation initiative repurposes hydropower assets and establishes pumped hydro energy storage stations. The new framework introduced new approaches for the procurement and payment of system strength services, including proactive planning obligations. This is to adapt the changes in the National Electricity Rules #NER for managing system strength, as #TasNetworks, is the System Strength Service Provider in the Tasmanian Region. The key aspects of these plans are: The optimal transmission development for the North West Tasmania Renewable Energy Zone and fully developed Marinus Link is a new 220 kV transmission ‘rectangle‘ in north-west Tasmania; Palmerston–Sheffield 220 kV transmission corridor augmentation that is required under the majority of future scenarios; and System strength and inertia requirements as increasing inverter-based resources (for example, wind farms) displace synchronous generators. Pakistan's relatively green energy mix, attributed to its hydropower program, contrasts with its heavy reliance on imported oil, coal, and LNG, comprising nearly a third of its energy sources. This dependence cost approximately Rs. 114 billion in fuel expenses in January alone, averaging Rs. 13.8 per kWh. Such a policy is unsustainable. However, the country stands to benefit significantly from transitioning to renewable energy, with a potential 13% reduction in generation costs. Following the government’s Indicative Generation Capacity Expansion Plan 2021–2030 entails constructing an additional 13.6 GW of solar and wind plants. Encouraging systemic investments by the private sector through competitive bidding and resulting competitive prices promises a greener future for Pakistan. #SolarEnergy #NetMetering #PakistanEnergySymposium2024 #EmpoweringPakistanWithData #EnergySector #RenewableEnergy #GreenEnergy

ROMANIA LAUNCHES FIRST FLOATING SOLAR POWER PLANT Romania has unveiled its first large-scale floating solar power plant. The 1 MW facility, developed by TMK Hydroenergy Power, a subsidiary of the EVRYO Group, is strategically located on a stilling basin adjacent to the company's 22 MW Grebla hydroelectric plant in Caras Severin county. This project is a collaborative effort between TMK Hydroenergy Power and state-owned national development bank Innovation Norway. The floating photovoltaic system is expected to generate electricity for the internal consumption of the hydropower plant, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 5,000 tonnes over five years. Liviu Gavrila, General Director of Generation at Evryo, expressed enthusiasm for the pilot project, stating, "We believe it will demonstrate its effectiveness, and we want to replicate it." This innovative initiative aligns with Romania's ambitious goal of generating 36% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, paving the way for more sustainable energy solutions in the country. ⚡ Follow MPS (Modern Power Systems) for all the latest news daily from the global power generation industry ⚡ #MPS #power #energy #powergeneration #solarenergy #photovoltaics
