"One critical question to ask is: when is an education system unjust? An education system is unjust if it doesn’t secure educationally for ALL children what a wise parent would desire for his/her own children. So as we seek to secure education for all children of Africa, we must ask: which kind of education?" This thought-provoking piece by our partner and friend Emmanuel Manyasa of Usawa Agenda raises a pertinent question for all #education stakeholders in the African continent as they marked the #DayoftheAfricanChild.

2024 being the African Union year of #Education, my commitment as a global education activist involves using my voice to emphasize the crucial and personally significant path of advocating for education. Shifting focus, I am shedding light on the often overlooked heroes in education: the Teachers in Africa. Quality education hinges on well-equipped and fairly compensated teachers. Having the privilege to train teachers in Mombasa County on Value-based education, I gained insights into their challenges. Working with Elimu Care a grassroot community based organization i founded, I witnessed the obstacles, particularly overcrowded classes, which compelled a reevaluation of our programs. This led to co-authoring an op-ed titled “Why Investing in Teachers is Critical to the future of every African child” with Mr Stephen Omollo the Global CEO of Plan International , featured on AllAfrica Global Media . The African Union's 2024 theme, "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century," underscores the need for resilient education systems. our plea to the leaders of our continent is to invest in training quality teachers. We ask that countries budget for training enough teachers to meet internationally recognized standards, and to do this every year as a vital long-term investment. Teachers, particularly female teachers, must also be properly compensated, and supported and have a workplace free from harassment and violence. Taken together, this is a change that will benefit every girl and boy and ultimately the whole of Africa, in building the skills we desperately need for the economies and societies of today and tomorrow. Why education remains a challenge in Africa? Education exclusion globally, according to the UN. Nearly 60% of youth aged 15 to 17 are not in school. Activists on the continent are now fighting to change that Education is considered a universal human right, as well as an issue of public good and responsibility. However, there are still many — particularly children in developing African countries — who do not enjoy this right. In many African nations, those who can afford education send their children to private schools in the city. But that is not an option for many in rural areas, or for poorer families. The education of girls is of particular concern: 9 million girls on the continent between the ages of 6 and 11 will never attend school, compared to 6 million boys. By the time they reach adolescence, girls have a 36% exclusion rate compared to 32% for boys

Education is vital to Africa's progress. Despite commendable strides in the past 60 years, insufficient funding, COVID-19, and gender disparities remain challenges. In 2021, 21 African heads of state signed the Declaration on Education Financing, which is a significant step forward. As the African Union sets 2024 as its year of education, we can hope for a brighter future. Every African child deserves access to quality education, which is essential to drive economic growth and development. Thank you The Guardian for this relevant and insightful article. #africa #education #childhoodeducation

📢 Let's talk about Education in South Africa 📢 The current state of education in South Africa is a cause for concern among many parents. Many schools in South Africa could be described as 'dysfunctional,' but according to the Department of Education, the schooling system is finally 'changing for the better.' However, most of the statistics accessed 📊 suggest that South African pupils lack basic skills and knowledge compared to their peers around the world and that the education standards in South Africa are, in general, very poor. However, there is a significant divide depending on the provinces, as well as the different school districts and even various schools within these districts. Here are some basic Education Facts: · 12.7M learners in 30K schools · 29:1 learner-to-teacher ratio in public schools · 18:1 in private schools · Average Grade 4 results: Home Language 49%, Math 37% · Grade 12 pass rate disputed but around 78.2% · Only 6% of adults have tertiary education; low graduation rates · The gender gap is small; more women attain upper-secondary or post-secondary education The state of education in South Africa is a complex issue with disparities across regions and schools. While efforts are being made to improve the system, there is still a long way to go to ensure that all South African students have access to quality education. 🌟 Let's hope for a brighter future where education becomes a beacon of opportunity and growth for all South African children. 🌞📚 #EducationMatters #BrighterFuture #EducationInSouthAfrica

Since the year of independence in 1961, the Government of Tanzania has until today the policy of free education for everyone, making education accessible regardless of economic background, benefiting society as a whole and improving the level of education among the citizens. This is a good policy and I praise my government for this. Being a student myself I noticed that despite the policy of free education, a group of talented and ambitious students that enroll are not able to make it to class or drop off during the course. I started wondering, with our free education policy, why is this happening? I started to research this further and discovered four main underlying issues and conditions that need to be in place to have the free education policy beneficial to all talented students. Firstly, there is the issue of access to food for students at their home. This is a significant challenge that can affect their ability to learn and attend school., Improving access to food in schools is essential. Secondly, the availability of school supplies such as uniforms, notebooks and bags is another issue that can be a barrier for students. Ensuring that students have access to these essential supplies is part of ensuring the success of the free education policy. Thirdly, the management and upbringing of children are crucial. This responsibility is often left to parents, especially women. It can have a significant impact on children's educational development. The government needs to put in place strategies to ensure that parents receive support when needed and that children receive proper care. Finally, improving the social and economic system is also crucial. By addressing the needs of poor families and ensuring they have access to economic and social opportunities, the government can help alleviate educational challenges By addressing these challenges, it is possible to achieve the goal of providing quality education to every child in Tanzania. My opinion is that the free education policy should be improved by collective efforts from the government, the community, and other stakeholders. What are your thoughts on this topic and how do you think we can address this? #Equality #Equity

The Legitimate Constitutional Application of Socio Economic Rights has Contributed to Poorly Educated Children in Sierra Leone. Inadequate government funding leads to supply shortages, untrained teachers, high pupil to teacher ratios, and the general low quality of the school systems. It is already hard enough for children to attend school to begin with. These inadequacies worsen the problems with education in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a developing country located in West Africa. Many people in Sierra Leone are living in poverty, partially due to poor education. We will discuss the reasons for poor attendance and low-quality schooling as well as the effects of poor education, such as low literacy rates in adults. Furthermore, we are going to discuss how poor education, and its causes perpetuate the cycle of poverty. In this discussion, the current strategies for promoting education in Sierra Leone are critiqued and other options for improving education are discussed.
