What a surreal, exciting moment! I started working on a House declaration of a mental health emergency when I was 17 years old, on a Google doc with my peers over summer break. Now, an adapted version has been introduced and passed by the U.S. Senate through unanimous consent. Thank you to Senators Padilla and Tillis, and especially to John Chambliss, who I met when I was first working on this initiative in the House in 2023. Since pioneering the introduction of H.Res.434 with Rep. Seth Moulton, John has been such a remarkable, indispensable, and diligent leader, bringing this issue to a bipartisan consensus in the Senate. Cady Chen, Ria Babaria, Dzian Tran and the rest of the team Youth Power Project have been such powerhouses in helping draft this measure and enabling our efforts to advance adolescent mental health to come to fruition over the last two years. I also deeply appreciate Laurel Stine, JD, MA, Michael Linskey, Cynthia Whitney, Dominique Freeman, and Courtney Hunter for all your guidance over the last two years, we are so lucky to be surrounded by such loving, energizing mentors. S.Res.769 is informed by shared stories of harm and inadequacy within the mental health system that underscore significant utilization gaps amongst young people in need, despite increased awareness, conversations, and infrastructure around mental health. Initial programs were built to be temporary sources of support advancing a one-size-fits-all approach, but long-term, diversely experience-driven, and culturally competent support services are needed to help youth with intersectional backgrounds and experiences that require support beyond what is currently offered. An agreement to pay attention cannot be conflated with an agreement to act. While this resolution is remarkable in highlighting the bipartisan prioritization of the adolescent mental health crisis, this emergency cannot be viewed in a silo.
