You have to admit that the headline "Digital health resilience leads to brilliance" by Rock Health is a bit cheesy but when you look at the amount raised and number of deals, the future sounds more optimistic in H1 of 2024 than in the H1 of 2023. If you look at the Leading Value Propositions and Clinical Indications table you can see a #1 Treatment of disease at $1.1B. In the Clinical Indications the top 4 investments are in #mentalhealth, #cardiovascular, #oncology and #weightmanagement & #obesity. The upcoming trend of Food-as-Medicine or Food Care shows strength with $200M investment in Foodsmart. "The digital health sector continues to demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Funding momentum (especially at the early stage) and the tapering of transition measures like unlabeled rounds hint that we might be returning to more “normal,” sustainable venture patterns." Few would argue against keeping bad actors out of healthcare. Some (including me) would argue that heavy handed legislation that lacks subtlety and nuance often produces unintended consequences. California is already facing a shortage of healthcare providers, and it's unclear if this legislation does anything to address that problem. If the bill stifles innovation (which these seemingly well-intentioned but often overreaching efforts do), things could be worse. Anyone who is pushing healthcare forward in a novel, sustainable, and innovative way should be supported, not hamstrung by unsophisticated, catch-all legislation. There has to be a mechanism for good actors to prove they're good actors. It's incumbent upon them to bring evidence, and it's incumbent upon decision-makers to give that evidence credence. Absolutism, narratives, and echo chambers in healthcare discourse are counterproductive, and we'd do well to move past them. We can and must pursue any viable avenue of change if there's any hope to make progress. (Consider the amount of money spent on CMS/CMMI programs that have produced few meaningful results.) Bad actors should be held accountable -- this includes corporate backers and venture capitalists. They shouldn't be allowed to shrug or feign ignorance when their companies misbehave. They should be subject to the same penalties levied on wayward clinicians when things go sideways. We need careful resection, not wanton excision. (Side note: Where is the legislation that addresses the underlying causes of consolidation? Abt Global evaluated The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Oncology Care Model's (OCM) effectiveness in reducing care costs while maintaining quality. To examine OCM's impact on #HealthEquity, we assessed four historically underserved populations: Black and Hispanic patients, those with dual eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid, and residents of resource-poor neighborhoods. Our findings showed that, before OCM, these groups had higher acute-care use and episode payments, but were less likely to receive timely chemotherapy after surgery, adhere to oral treatments, or receive hospice care. While OCM improved oral treatment adherence for all groups, care quality was not consistently improved and only the treatment of Hispanic patients showed reduced payment costs. Exciting find! I stumbled upon an insightful article by the incredible Cornell P. Wright, MPA, in an unexpected place—not on a public health forum or a DE&I platform, but on a technology site! As my startup, Shift Sphere, prepares to launch, Cornell’s compelling views on health equity resonate deeply with our mission. He emphasizes the transformative power of innovation and inclusivity. What is it like to witness a health tech startup grow from seed stage to a $72M Series C? I joined Two Chairs as a founding team member in 2017. We had no clinic, no clinicians, and no clients. Just 4 people in a co-working space dreaming big. Not all mental health tech companies are made equal. This one was made different. I’ve been given advice that the fastest way to monetize HER Heard without charging the end user (woman) is trackers and selling data. Instead, I’d like to build something more trustworthy. I don’t want to be in a headline like this. If you are not paying, then you are the product (you/your data are being sold). There are newer ways to deindentify data or even to aggregate things women search for that can be of interest to various stakeholders. In theory that could be okay to sell, but in a post-Roe world with laws encouraging bounty hunting, I am vetting the choices ahead. I am all for moving fast, without breaking things.

Interesting study published in The Lancet, Regional Health The notion of providing data upon “reasonable request” has, paradoxically, turned into an inside joke and a meme in the scientific community, which highlights the gap between policy and practice. While the pretext often cited for this guarded approach is the protection of sensitive patient information—a concern universally respected—the reality frequently belies this justification. In many cases, accessing anonymized datasets becomes an insurmountable challenge even with no perceivable risk to patient privacy. In 2022, researchers in Croatia contacted 1792 authors to gauge whether their data were truly available upon request; 93% of authors ignored the email or denied sharing. Individual scientists often face mixed incentives for data sharing, influenced by research domain, methods, and resources, highlighting the need for more supportive infrastructures and clear benefits to encourage open science practices.' https://lnkd.in/en8tXTDx

While focused on America and a very different developed health system to Samoa, much of what was shared was applicable to Samoas context. Samoa needs primary care at the core of its health system and public health service with public health supporting and, a clear understanding of what 'public health the specialty', 'primary care' and 'public health service' are. We need a robust primary care infrastructure to deliver on the public health concerns for better patient outcomes. We need health workers trained appropriately in primary care and especially when they are posted to rural health facilities with limited resources. Loved the talanoa on value- based payments / contracts #toyinajahi looking forward to the day of primary care services that puts people and patient outcomes first.

Karthik Sivashanker is advancing #healthequity on several fronts. #Safety is a critical issue. It is the key reason for my leaving various jobs when I did, after having maxed out my ability to work within the system for needed change. My recent #MBA was after my tour of the c-suite in #NYC, after restructuring #Medicaid in MA, and understanding that Wall St runs all of #healthcare, including “not for profit.” Across many settings I was seeing concerning process changes driven by budget cuts, resulting in measurably worse outcomes at scale. I learned that merely “it is the right thing to do” or citing safety will not get results. We need to be able to show why doing the right thing and safety are good for “margins.” We also do need robust and consistent #accountabilty mechanisms from government.
