#thebigshift An editor asked for my take on the "Great Resignation." It was easy to quit my job. But getting a new job in a new field was much harder than I thought. “I’ll quit my job as a creative branding director, take a year off, and transition to a new career in philanthropy and an entry-level job in fundraising and apply my marketing expertise. No problem.” Months later, my wife suffered a significant injury. I paused my plans. Two years later, I witnessed 25-year-olds with one year experience in philanthropy get the jobs I applied for, “because you have no direct experience in fundraising.” Three years later, and I have returned to marketing consulting and branding. But mostly, I enjoy editing and marketing my wife’s book writing. Her Big Shift is successful: She works half time as a physician and uses that platform to write medical-based novels and nonfiction work on breast cancer. MY ADIVCE: Be careful to quit your current job. #TheBigshift, #The Great Resignation.

The "big shift" is in high gear as employees have more opportunities to work on their terms. The work at home/remote movement can be great for people already in an organization. My concern and thought is how do new hires learn the culture of a company while working remotely. We all need to continue to embrace change and understand the current motivation of our employees and team members. I have been enjoying the work from remote locations since 2020 and will never go back to a tradtional office setting. Many people have tasted this way of working and will likely not stay will a company that would require the return to the old office setting. Productivity is still the critical benchmark that employees to be held to.This will require all of us to continue to check in the the people we lead/coach and understand what is important to them. Hope all is well in your world Hal!

Career changes are natural. As you develop as a person, interests and passions change. For me, I've been in transition longer than expected. But I AM moving forward. You need to be able to do multiple things at once -- ie: don't give up your day job (too soon)!

Could your shift be something you didn't initially think about...editing, putting your marketing skills towards people getting projects off the ground, like new books?
