One of the major tech goals of many automakers is to build a powerful and rugged #EV motor that does not use rare earth elements. Now, ZF Group claims to have done it, and I learned more about this achievement in a lengthy discussion with Otmar Scharrer. News like this underscores the important role of government in providing the investment security to drive the energy transition in North America, particularly when it comes to the EV revolution, it’s most important disruptor. While more needs to be done to this end, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) is a major component to effect change, providing significant incentives for EV uptake with a $7,500 rebate to the consumer for the purchase of an electric vehicle that contains minimum amounts of locally sourced critical minerals, including its largest component: graphite. To be eligible for the rebate, the percentage by value of critical minerals extracted and processed in the United States or in a U.S. free-trade partner must meet a rising scale of thresholds that start at 40 percent and grow to 80 percent and beyond by the end of the decade. At Northern Graphite, the only natural graphite producer in North America, we are working to be THE Next Generation Carbon Materials Company of the energy transition, targeting mine output growth, and working to start supplying battery anode material (BAM) to automakers from our Baie-Comeau facility, where we plan first phase production in 2026. This is very interesting #EV from an environment perspective was always suspect I have a theory re this a) Musk proposed autonomous vehicles b) when that did not quite work out focused on EV c) with high interest rates and downward market - EVs are not so interesting d) meanwhile other automakers (you can see the same impact on initiatives like CARIAD in Germany also showed signs of slowdown e) China which invested (and subsidised) EV also may see a reversal f) As will the numerous mining initiatives also subsidised we need to go away from fossil fuels but EV may not be the solution maybe we will now explore other solutions ex from Brazil (ethanol) https://lnkd.in/eZMMMiPC

The US will soon be able to provide the full electrification of its car industry with newly produced domestic lithium batteries, independent from China and South America, where the mining of lithium is also a lot less clean. In the meantime, the Japanese and European car industry are lagging further behind. For example, the VW ID models are in stock in large quantities and we also do not have lithium supply (yet). If we want to play a key role in decarbonizing the world and profit from it by innovating our industries, we need a stronger EU to lead the way. It was Germany and Italy that facilitated dieselgate in the past decade, while innovation was nil. As people are less interested in driving high-mileage country crossing vehicles than low-cost vehicles for city driving, low energy density lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) batteries will remain more relevant to the market than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries.
