Are companies seeking a candidate that doesn't exist? At the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam yesterday the panel discussion on "Careers Combatting Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrogen Sector" sparked some compelling insights and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in building human capabilities for the Hydrogen Economy. While it is true that the hydrogen sector is rapidly evolving, demanding a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability, there are ways of bridging the disparity between existing skill sets and the evolving needs of the hydrogen market. Transitioning from conventional energy requires strategic navigation, but achievements in conventional energy aren't obsolete and they are instead often seen as transferable assets. Recognising and articulating the transferable nature of these achievements can redefine one's career narrative in the clean energy realm. As we embark on this transformative journey, let us remain committed to bridging the gap between existing skill sets and the evolving needs of the hydrogen market, ensuring that together, we build a brighter and more sustainable future. As a natural introvert, public speaking has never been my strong suit. In fact, it's something I've always dreaded. However, I recently had the pleasure of presenting the World Hydrogen Awards alongside Ciara Willis at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition. Despite my initial nerves, the adrenaline rush I felt afterwards was exhilarating and left me on a high. This experience got me thinking about the importance of confidence in the hydrogen industry and the broader energy transition. Just like overcoming my fear of public speaking, tackling the hurdles in the hydrogen market requires a collective confidence and determination. It's a field full of opportunities, but also challenges. From technological advancements to market acceptance and regulatory support, each step requires unwavering belief in the potential of hydrogen and other ET initiatives as a clean energy solution. Presenting at the Hydrogen Awards was a personal milestone for me, and it served as a reminder of the power of confidence and perseverance. As we continue to navigate the path towards a sustainable energy future, let's carry this confidence with us, tackle the hurdles with determination, and excel in our efforts to make hydrogen a cornerstone of the energy transition. #summit #awards #careers #hydrogen #careers #energytransition #netzero

My quest to understand the fundamental functioning of today's world has, in the last 5 months, taken me into the energy industry, at an internship in the global #hydrogen strategy of RWE Mirroring the western economy, RWE is undergoing a transformation, from one of Europe's largest emitters (see the video I took visiting RWE's biggest lignite mines), to one of its largest suppliers of renewable energy. But the economy cannot be decarbonised using renewable electricity on its own. So many of the day-to-day products, which we have come to take for granted, are a product of at least some fossil fuels - the steel in your cars (or my bike), our phones, clothing, our hygiene products. If we really want to put an end to oil and gas, we need to use alternatives and recycle existing materials. Green Hydrogen will be part of that solution. But while it (almost*) solves the problem of GHG emissions, it comes with other challenges. In its nascency - once more - politicians, suppliers of renewable energy, technical equipment, and buyers have to work together to overcome them. At the end of the value chain, though, consumers have to decide if they are willing to pay more for green products, directly or in the form of taxes. I'm thankful for all the learnings, discussions and salads I had with the Global Strategy Team at RWE . And I'm excited to see how your strategy will play out… *Analysing the sustainability of green hydrogen production, I found that - despite its name - life cycle greenhouse gas emissions are far from zero.

𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐇 June 2024 is an upcoming contest by 𝐂𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐅𝐈𝐗 aimed at inspiring college students to innovate for climate. In the run-up to the event, we are conducting the 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞, where participants tackle daily climate-related questions, showcasing their creativity and knowledge. The challenge for May 28 was: 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐰: 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 1 : A breakthrough idea in nuclear fusion that can make it modular, though it could take at least 2 decades to become commercial 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 2 : A free, intuitive smart phone app that claims to provide effective sustainability education to the masses right away, covering over 50 lifestyle activities 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 3 : An innovative, affordable monitoring system that can increase the output of large solar power plants by about 15% and which can be implemented within months for many existing solar power plants. Which of the three innovations would you choose as the winner, and why. About 50 participants answered - thank you to every one of you! The 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫-𝐮𝐩 for May 28 is: Arpit Agarwal - from Indian Institute of Foreign Trade His answer: Innovation 3, which improves solar power plant efficiency by 15%, can be implemented immediately. With the global solar capacity at 1412 GW in 2023, this innovation would add an impressive 211 GW and significantly reduce CO2 emissions by about 809 million kg. In contrast, Innovation 1, a modular nuclear fusion concept, while potentially transformative, requires over 20 years to commercialise and is currently feasible for only few nations because only 32 out of 195 countries are using current fission technology. Innovation 2, a sustainability education app, faces competition from existing apps like GoodGuide and JouleBug, making it less unique. Therefore, the rapid deployability and substantial environmental impact of Innovation 3 make it the most effective and feasible choice. Congrats Arpit, and may you scale greater heights.
