I was pleased to serve as an advisor for the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's NASEM Gulf Research Program's planning process for the recently launched $50 million Gulf Futures Challenge. The Gulf Futures Challenge aims to leverage the inherent talent and knowledge of the people of the Gulf by supporting ideas and solutions from those who understand the region best. The Challenge seeks innovative solutions at the intersection of three futures: the Future of the Energy Transition, the Future of Environmental Change along the Coast, and the Future of Healthy and Resilient Communities. Lead organizations must be based within Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi or Texas, and proposed projects should occur within 100 miles of the U.S. Gulf coastline. Trust is key when it comes to healthcare. Everyone should be able to go to their healthcare provider and know they’ll be treated with respect and have their concerns taken seriously. I’m heartened to see AJMC - The American Journal of Managed Care sharing such valuable insights into how we can improve the data – and care – for our #LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors.

A recent KFF report showed that 24% of LGBTQ+ adults, compared to only 9% of non-LGBTQ+ adults, experienced a negative healthcare experience in the past three years that *worsened* their health. Our health systems cannot improve for all if they aren't accessible and inclusive to everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. We must improve how data is collected for LGBTQ+ individuals if we want to address the disparities they face and create better access to high-quality care. Although we have much work left to do to transform our data systems, I am proud of the significant step the Office of Management and Budget is taking by revising federal race and ethnicity standards. Our country has benefitted from and progressed because of our diversity, but our data doesn’t reflect that. We cannot get communities the resources they deserve without ensuring everyone is counted and all voices are heard. That is why this moment is so monumental. We have the chance to show society why and how we all benefit from comprehensive data and why data is essential to help everyone thrive. In a recent briefing by Ethnic Media Services, I discuss how this country is in a transformational moment and why changes such as these OMB revisions show how our country is on the right path towards prioritizing diversity and overcoming our history of discrimination.
