Cincinnati Children's Hospital recently made world news by achieving the No. 1 ranking for best Children's Hospitals, unseating Boston's long-held position for the first time in almost a decade. This accomplishment is a significant milestone for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and it didn't come overnight. This type of transformation requires a deliberate and sustained pursuit of excellence. The hospital attributes their success to a focused commitment on these specific areas: *Continuous Improvement: Engaging in learning, small-scale experimentation, benchmarking, and "being the best at getting better." *Employee Empowerment: Actively seeking staff input, providing opportunities for growth, and fostering a supportive environment. *Patient and Family Engagement: Collaborating with patients and families to improve processes and outcomes. *Narrowing Health Disparities: Taking concrete and actionable steps to achieve health equity. It's a powerful reminder that success in healthcare is about improving the patient experience and building a positive organizational culture. Nicole B. Thomas Graduates from ELEVATE Program – A Leadership Development Initiative for Black Health Care Executives Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 22, 2023) – On Saturday, Sept. 16, a cohort of eight leading Black health care executives completed the ELEVATE program, an initiative founded by Black senior health care executives to equip rising Black health care leaders with a supportive and structured environment for learning, development and advancement. This year’s cohort, the second annual cohort, included Nicole B. Thomas, President from Baptist Medical Center, in Jacksonville, FL, as well as • Susan R. Burroughs, former CEO, MUSC Health- Columbia Medical Center Northeast, Columbia, SC • Anthony B. Coleman, President/CEO, Broadlawns Medical Center, Des Moines, IA • Roland Cruickshank, COO, Ascension Metro West Region, West Bloomfield, MI • Gabrielle Finley-Hazle, CEO, Dignity Health Arizona Central and West Valley Market, CommonSpirit Health, Phoenix, AZ • Dana Weston Graves, President, Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Virginia Beach, VA • Dia Nichols, President, Advocate Health Care, representing the Illinois market of Advocate Health, Park Ridge, IL • Denzil K. Ross, CEO, Northwest Medical Center Houghton, Tucson, AZ In this year’s ELEVATE program, the eight cohort members met three times, in Washington, D.C., Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina, learning more about the health care industry and continuing to hone their skills to advance to the highest rungs of leadership within health systems. ELEVATE was created by current and former leaders of major health care systems, including visionary founders, Kevin E. Lofton, CEO emeritus of CommonSpirit Health, and Eugene A. Woods, chief executive officer of Advocate Health. After completing the program, participants are better prepared to take on greater and more senior-level roles and responsibilities within major health care enterprises. This, in turn, helps increase diversity in health system C-Suites. The first ELEVATE cohort has already demonstrated success in achieving these goals. According to a 2021 survey from the Chartis Group, only 10% of total C-suite positions were filled by Black leaders and just 6% of CEOs for the surveyed hospitals were Black. Among hospitals, 46% of those surveyed had at least one Black leader in its C-Suite.

You know how it feels when you're trying to change the world, but the world seems to keep stinging back? 🐝 About a decade ago, I left my long-established career in cell biology and dived headfirst into healthcare. The task? To eliminate errors and increase the safety and quality of patient care. Taking a sabbatical at Harvard, I focused on learning about business administration, public health, and the elusive art of changing people's minds. I even wrote a book along the way, charting a five-point plan for healing our healthcare delivery system. 📘 The journey wasn't smooth. As the new director for quality and safety, I faced resistance just the way I did when I was a child trying to capture bees from my grandmother's honeysuckle bushes. The stings were painful but educational. These experiences shape you, helping understand that change often comes in small, non-threatening steps that people are willing to accept. As we collectively navigate the path toward improving healthcare, every small step counts. My journey from cell biology to spearheading healthcare safety has been filled with lessons that I believe can inspire and guide us all. Something big is brewing in our profession—a united force for a brighter future. Our differences, be it clinical practice, retail, academia or industry, make us unique. Yet, we all belong to a shared ecosystem, and that ecosystem needs our collective voice more than ever. Just picture this. We're often caught up in our separate spheres, each dealing with its set of challenges. But what if we united? A united front, a single spear tip, could cause seismic shifts in policies and working conditions. Now consider this: we pharmacists do much more than dispense prescriptions. Our value spans from medication therapy management to preventive healthcare services. It's high time we redefine the boundaries and broaden the scope of our role in healthcare. And about working conditions, aren't we all too familiar with the long hours, missing breaks, and sky-high job demands? These aren't just complaints, folks. They're systemic concerns that impact patient care. It's time we rallied for conditions that let us do our job, and do it well. Remember, we're the change. We're the individual professionals shaping this great community. Let's band together and propel change, with our peers and professional organizations. Here's a challenge for you: 1. Share your thoughts on uniting our profession. Include your ideas in the comments. 2. Know a colleague who should see this? Go ahead and mention them. 3. And if this resonates with you, share it. Let's amplify the call for change. It's time we stopped accepting the status quo. Let's push for more—for our patients, our communities, and ourselves. We deserve it.

I had the incredible privilege of serving as the Internal Medicine Chief Resident at St. Joseph's Health (St. Joseph's University Medical Center). It was an honor to lead and guide these young physicians in the most formative years of their training. This role allowed me to witness healthcare from an administrative perspective, and I could feel the weight of leadership responsibilities. As a leader, I learned that we are essentially here to protect the vulnerable and fight against greed. It wasn't easy to bring about real change, but I fought tirelessly for the rights and well-being of my fellow residents. I realized that the quality of patient care is directly linked to the well-being of the doctors providing it. Leadership is not for the faint of heart. It's tough to see things done the wrong way and not be able to change them. I was often told, "Choose your fight; you can't change everything at once." But after years of witnessing the challenges in our healthcare system, I beg to differ. When numerous changes are needed, it's not merely a change—it's a revolution. Healthcare in the United States needs a revolution, and I'm determined to play a role in it. GastroMedConnect is poised to be a leader in the healthcare revolution we so desperately need.
