So many people have been supportive of Dan & me as we've put on our boutique hotel owner hats for the New Glarus Hotel! 🏨❤️ I'm planning to share a little more on LinkedIn about our journey, starting with all the gems 💎 we're finding as we continue the cleanup of the hotel before we get into full restoration mode. 🚧 As you can imagine, cleaning out a 175-year-old hotel means that we're always finding incredible (& hilarious!) pieces of history, like this sign: "Notice: All employees are requested to take a bath 🛀 before reporting for work. If I'm going to have to kiss 😘 your rear to get you to do anything, I want it to be clean. Introducing this week’s #HotelierOfTheWeek! 🥂 Andy Barnsdale is the General Manager at The Principal York (currently being rebranded to The Milner York) and started his career behind the bar in a hotel on the Isle of Wight for a summer season, with the intention of learning as much as he could so he could fulfil his goal to one day run a pub. Instead, Andy found himself on a management track moving across different roles within hospitality, ultimately progressing to become a General Manager across multiple resorts for Bourne Leisure Ltd. “From that point on I knew exactly where I wanted my career to go, I had my sights set on management in hotels,” Andy said. Andy moved on to become General Manager at multiple venues, which provided him valuable experience to run large scale period properties and successfully grow their business and people. For Andy, every day as a hotelier is a unique adventure. In his role, he thrives on the unpredictability of each day, finding joy in the diverse challenges and rewards that come his way. Andy revealed that the most fulfilling aspect of his role is witnessing the hard work of his dedicated teams come to fruition, resulting in exceptional hospitality experiences for guests. Andy takes immense pride in mentoring his team members, helping them grow and supporting them in achieving their goals. Currently, Andy is excited about the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York. He has played a pivotal role in promoting top employees to key positions to ensure a smooth transition in the hotel's identity and culture. Walking into the hotel each morning, he said “I feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment.” Andy emphasised the importance of thorough research and first-hand experience for anyone entering the hotel industry. He advises prospective candidates to visit the property they are interested in, engage with the staff, and experience the hotel as a guest. This simple yet profound step can make a significant impression during the interview process. The hotel industry offers a multitude of opportunities for career growth and seizing these opportunities with a willingness to get involved is key to building a successful career in hospitality. Throughout his career, Andy has had the privilege of working with outstanding people and properties, achieving commercial success, and winning multiple awards. Among his accolades are receiving two rosettes and an AA 4-star rating for his hotels. However, Andy considers the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York to be a defining moment in his career. Purpose-driven hospitality. Three individual words, but when combine become powerful. I love it and this story! I like to say I’m in the hospitality industry, just on the meetings and events segment. To work in this industry, hospitality is something that we innately all posses. It isn’t taught, to me it’s something we just know. It is the heart and the passion of why we go to work each day. It’s the joy in seeing the happiness on our attendees faces, the “wow-effect” on our clients, the stories we create and the journeys we map out. It’s the moment makers in life. But to know that each action is purpose, is powerful and can can be life changing. I’d like to say that every one of my actions in my role of designing, creating and executing an experience is purposeful and so are my life decisions. But in all honestly, I get lost in the busyness of life and sometimes cruise through on auto-pilot. Dear friends "Night Shift" is one that is either dreaded...or one that is eagerly looked forward to... :-) / ;-) My friend Vikram Cotah in his opening sentence says "...everyone thinks of hotel industry as a glamorous place..." I beg to differ... Hotel industry IS A GLAMOROUS PLACE! Otherwise why will someone pay 1 lakh, yes, Rupees ONE LAKH, plus taxes, to stay in a room? A 5-star hotel room is an "ASPIRATIONAL PLACE", and a "RECOGNITION PLACE", an "ACHIEVEMENT PLACE" For e.g., when two corporate executives from different companies meet in a "industry event", and if they by chance talk about where they are staying, believe me, I talk about 30 years back, but if one told the other "I am in the Taj", you could see the glow of "respect" in the other person's eyes, even if for a fraction of a moment! :-) I do not know if he remembers or not, and I do not know if you people know or not But, as part of our training [though I was going into Corporate Sales, I insisted on being 'suitably grounded'] I was exposed to the amazing level of training that each and every employee of the "Disney Amusement Park" went through... And that video inspired me to develop a completely new business strategy, i.e., "Increasing Business Revenue THROUGH exemplary [read "floor them"] Customer Service leading to Customer Loyalty" :-) And my strategy was a success, whether in Vizag, or in Chennai, or in Bengaluru, but they are stories of another day Coming back to "Night Shift", more than the Taj Group, I thank the Welcomgroup culture [maybe because they were a very young organization compared to the Taj Group and the Oberois] because my "brother-friend" Yogesh Mittal and I had the best time, for at the end of the day One may join an organization, but one normally leaves because of one's boss And if my career had got a different start, i.e. with the Welcomgroup, I WOULDN'T HAVE LEFT THEM [and I am sure they wouldn't have let me go; thank you my Guru Nakul Anand :-) ] Dear Vikram You are doing amazing things And I have offered my candidature publicly Now it's up to you, and to THE PEOPLE who jointly decide on matters like this :-) With Best Wishes :-)

Dear hotelier I hope you are well when you see the critical situation.Don't be panic.The conditions depend on you.because of this industry is takes a lots of sacrifices and time.generally work hours not limited.but this industry is a luxurious and professional. it should be try to understand each and everything.Hospitality means primarily the creation of free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy.
