Chan Zuckerberg Initiative funds a new research center in NYC to build next generation cell-based therapies 🚀 The hub includes researchers from Columbia University, The Rockefeller University and Yale University who will try to understand how immune cells identify cellular issues, such as cancer and dementia, with the aim to engineer cells that can detect and treat abnomalities not detected by the native immune system 🧪 These blue sky initiatives rarely achieve their initial goals, but invariably creates a fruitful ecosystem for out-of-the-box research, nurturing talents and creating collaborations that would never happen in the traditional academic or biopharma world They are most welcome in a world dominated by too conventional approaches to research Looking forward to following their advances ! Round two of MRC Centres of Research Excellence (MRC CoRE) is now open. This £50m opportunity will fund up to two MRC CoREs to support bold and ambitious research that aims to improve human health. For this round we’ll be welcoming applications to address challenges in the following research themes: 🩺 enhancing health span – to achieve a step change in increasing healthy life expectancy 🦠 immune regulation – to improve our understanding of how the immune system interacts with, and is shaped by, other biological systems 🔬 molecular mechanisms to inform cancer intervention – to develop a more integrated understanding of cancer biology MRC CoREs can be hosted by a single research organisation or in partnership across multiple organisations. In the future, a bio-machine built from a patient’s own cells will travel across the body, searching for cancers, repairing damaged tissue, delivering drugs, and even removing plaque from blood vessels. At least, that’s where it all seems to be going. A team at Tufts University and Harvard University’s Wyss Institute announced its latest creation – anthrobots. These are self-propelled organoids made from adult human cells without any genetic modification that show remarkable healing effects, particularly in neuron growth across damaged areas in lab conditions. However, researchers think they can enhance these bio-robots’ potential by modifying their genomes for desired functions such as delivering cancer drugs or screening for diseases. Med Tech in Focus:   Palm-Sized Biosensor Detects up to 32 Different Diseases Researchers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendof have developed a palm-sized biosensor transistor device that uses nanoparticles to simultaneously detect up to 32 different disease pathogens using a single sample of body fluid. The system uses electrical transistors to monitor current flow in a sample. If a current flow rate changes, it’s a signal that disease related particles have been detected. The biosensors can be “tuned” to detect different biomolecules from cancer cells to viruses and gold nanoparticles were used to amplify the sensitivity of the results. The researchers engineered the device to be cost effective using up to 32 separate electrodes connected to the transistor so that each transistor could be used multiple times. Prior to this new device, each transistor only measured one type of biomolecule and had to be discarded after that one use. In the future, it’s hoped that the device could be used to monitor the progress of immunotherapies in patients or to predict the severity of viruses such as influenzas. A mammoth step forward 🐘🧫 A biotech startup, whose objective is to revive extinct woolly mammoths, has reached a first important milestone on its quest. It created a key stem cell for Asian elephants, the closest relative to mammoths. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄❓ 1. Scientists have created versatile elephant stem cells, which could become any tissue. 2. Elephants' robust cancer defenses make creating such cells significantly challenging. 3. This work might help protect existing elephants and could have positive implications for cancer research.
