When I joined New Belgium Brewing in 2021, Shaun Belongie and I were already dreaming about a podcast that could bring New Belgium’s pioneering, Human-Powered Business business model to life. Not another business pod for business people, but an intriguing listen for ANYONE, from entry-level to exec, who feels the impacts of dehumanized capitalism... and thinks we can do better.
Eighteen months later, I'm proud to share 🎧 GREEN FLAGS 🎧 – a new podcast from New Belgium & ODD Media (and co-hosted by me and Maude Standish) about the quest for a better business model. In each episode, we examine the red flags 🛑 of corporate America today – with the goal of turning them into simple and actionable green flags ✅ that represent a humanized approach to business.
Several episodes of GREEN FLAGS are now available 🔊 on SPOTIFY, APPLE, or wherever you listen to podcasts. I’d be honored if you would give it a listen, rate/follow, and consider SHARING it with your people! And please drop me a line with your honest thoughts and feedback.
Here's the full scoop...
To develop and create GREEN FLAGS, we had the pleasure of partnering with the brilliant Maude Standish & Russell Sanzgiri at ODD Media, as well as writer/producer John Haas, a Peabody Award-winner with deep experience from NPR, Marketplace, and more.
Over nine episodes, we had the honor of talking to a ton of fascinating people, while putting a humanized-business lens at a bunch of hot topics – such as...
** What does ‘bring your whole self to work’ REALLY mean – and what might be more honest? (feat. Mike Robbins, Cindy Gallop, Chase C., Ashanti Ishakarah, and more)
** Can ONE WORKER cause an entire company to step up on climate change? (feat. Bill Weihl, Ken Pucker, Katherine Champagne & more)
** Does thinking about our pay only in dollars end up making us POORER? (feat. Bobby Ciccaglione, Shauna Cobb & Samantha Conroy)
** SHOULD our coworkers be ‘family’? (feat. Stuart Summerville, Allison R. Thorson, MaryLeigh Bliss & Julianna Pillemer)
** Is NAPTIME a hidden ticket to growth? (feat. Christopher Barnes, Rebecca Robbins, PhD MS, Courtney Simmons, and more)
By the way, sometimes people ask what beer has to do with changing capitalism. Well, a craft brewery is a business. And New Belgium has become the biggest, fastest growing, and most innovative business in the craft beer industry by staying true to our humanized principles as we’ve scaled.
Beyond those I mentioned, so many others have played a big role in this project, including Talented Friends, Jason Reimer, Megan Olson, Celine Wright, Kelsey Ireland, Zoe Evanitus, Taylor Humby, Laura Smith, Abby Czarniecki, Consume & Create™ , Bully Pulpit Interactive, and more. And Steve Fechheimer for trusting us, Katie Wallace for so much passion, teaching, and inspiration, and everyone at New Belgium for being damn good people.
