At least that's what Bethanie Drake-Maples, Merve Cerit, Aditya Vishwanath, and Roy Pea found in the study linked in the comments. Many students experience loneliness. AI can help them be more social and even prevent suicide. The most vulnerable students: → Single → Young → Low-income They struggle to access traditional support services. AI companions can be a lifeline for lonely students. AI chatbots help students be more social in the real world. Here’s why: ✅ Lonely students find solace in AI companions. ✅ They find it easier to disclose struggles to a chatbot. ✅ Traditional support services are harder to access. ✅ They may have time and financial constraints. The benefits of AI extend beyond providing a listening ear. 3x more students were stimulated in human interactions Rather than displaced in those interactions. AI chatbots can help students build social skills and confidence. It’s about time we bust these myths about AI companions: 1️⃣ AI chatbots ≠ poor substitute for human interaction AI chatbots can help build social skills and confidence. But they are a complement to human interaction. They are not a replacement for it. 2️⃣ AI companions are always impersonal They are not human. But they don't lack empathy. They provide a low-pressure environment for students to disclose struggles. AI chatbots are 100% flexible. Students can build a persona they want to talk to. Gender, age, expertise, name, education, location, preferences. ____________________ Many students find AI chatbots to be a lifeline. Is it time to consider embracing this new kind of support? Here’s how: 1️⃣ Engage with AI chatbots They can provide a listening ear when you need it most. Customize an AI companion to suit your needs. 2️⃣ Leverage the low-pressure environment "Safely" disclose struggles and build social skills. This might help overcome loneliness and find confidence. 3️⃣ Seek balance Use chatbots as a complement to human interaction. If you teach, do one thing now: Build a pedagogical foundation. I don’t think #AI will go away, but it will advance and the next thing will pop up. If the foundation is the tech, the learning house will crumble and will be painful to rebuild from the foundation up. If the foundation is the pedagogy, the learning house will still crumble but it will be significantly easier to rebuild. That’s why I’m all in on mastery learning as the foundation. It’s pedagogically how humans have been learning for thousands of years. Some things advance (and come and go). Some things stay the same. I’ll bet on those that stay the same while experimenting with those that come and go so my students can stay relevant. Thanks, as always for the thought-provoking post Jason

More than 1,000 students asked me how to use #AI. Most are paralyzed by limiting beliefs. Why? 1️⃣ Lack of understanding It’s hard to use AI if you don’t know how to talk to it. Learn the basics. Practice with simple prompts Start with the prompt database in the comments 👇 2️⃣ Lack of practice The only things you need to learn prompt engineering? → Clear goals → Consistent practice Forget complex theories and jargon. Practice regularly and you'll improve. 3️⃣ Perfectionism paralysis What holds most students back? Perfectionism. The perfect prompt. The perfect AI response. The perfect result. No wonder they never get anywhere. Get started. Then get better. Done is better than perfect. 4️⃣ Fear of AI It’s crazy how many students think AI is too complex. Use AI as a tool, learn from it, and control it. Don't fear AI. Put in the practice to understand it. 5️⃣ Picking hard prompts The journey is challenging enough as it is. Why make learning AI harder than it has to be? Start with simple prompts and build up to complex ones. (or skip that and use Ruben Hassid's Prompt Maker GPT) ✅ That's why students struggle with AI prompts. Now, how to actually master AI. (Hint: it doesn’t come from avoiding it) 1️⃣ Set clear goals Know what you want from the AI. Specific answers? Creative ideas? Funny images? Data analysis? The possibilities are indeed endless. 2️⃣ Practice regularly Using AI is a skill. You master a skill by practicing. Just try. Get feedback. Improve. Consistently. There is no "perfect." Practice more every day. Learn from each attempt. 3️⃣ Understand AI responses Analyze the output you get. Learn from it. Refine your prompts.
