This really resonates with my recent thoughts on how we can use #AI to assist and augment our student's thinking. If teachers only focus on assessing products, we will always worry about cheating. If we also focus on the thinking process, #generativeai can be seen as a potential form of assistance rather than just cheating.

If students need to struggle in order to learn, why would we encourage them to use AI? I wrote about AI and the question of "rigor." Similar to our beliefs about grading, our beliefs about rigor are deep and complex and probably not discussed enough. AI could be the spark we need to get clear about what matters for learning and how to think about AI and productive struggle.

When we think about AI’s impact on learning and skill aquisition, it is helpful to think about evidence based grading, teaching, and learning. We must be in a coaching conversation with our students and leverage authentic, iterative forms of assessments. The world already changed. So must we.

The Unavoidable Topic…AI In the past, we would go to the library and after hours, days, weeks, months of sticking our noses in books, we would find answers to questions. Now, we just ask an AI to help us! Artificial Intelligence is an unavoidable topic. Businesses are learning that one way to be ahead is to develop an AI for your business/company. Experts are getting scared that AIs will take our jobs. I believe that we can learn and adapt with the times, like we always have. The Earth is ours. God created the world for man. And not man for the world. We are to subdue, dominate, replenish, multiply…basically take care of the earth. I recently enrolled in an AI program, like I mentioned in my previous post. And because I am first and foremost a teacher before a techie🙃, I would like to give us some AI literacy education, if we don’t mind. How does it work? How does the machine learn? Three ways: 1. Supervised learning: Learning with labelled data and following the instructions (Algorithms) that the developers feed the AI. 2. Reinforcement learning: The AI improves through trial, error and feedback. 3. Unsupervised learning: The AI identifies patterns and works with insights from data without explicit instructions. Well, let’s call this part 1, then.😁

Ethan Mollick's substack is always excellent and worth reading, and the latest edition is a good 'new year stock take' on AI over the last year and what may be in the next year. Two things really struck me from the post. 1. At one organisation, before they can post a new job, they have to spend a couple of hours trying to automate the potential job using AI. Most of us are not very good at constantly thinking about how new tools / technologies / approaches might improve how we work, but this approach forces a regular review of what is possible in a very practical sense. I'm sure it's not the right approach for everyone, but is quite an interesting approach to fuel transformation. 2. A study found that tutoring with the help of GPT-4 significantly improved performance on SAT maths problems. There is no question that AI tools are being used extensively in education, with both good and more concerning examples and implications. This bit struck me though because GPT-4 is a general tool - not specific to education or tutoring and yet, with a bit of guidance, is able to help students learn more effectively. That is, I think, I really encouraging sign that AI can improve outcomes and give access to a 'tutor-like' experience to many students who would otherwise not be able to afford it. My AI Has My Brain In a world increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI), I am thrilled to share my personal experience with AI as a tool for academic content development. As a student, researcher, or even an educator, you know the struggle of information overload. Too much data, too little time. Trying to stay updated, let alone being creative or innovative, can feel like an uphill battle. But what if I told you that there is a way to harness the power of AI to make this journey a lot smoother? Just like you feed a question to a search engine and get millions of results, you can ask an AI a well-crafted question and get an accurate, precise answer. You might be thinking, "Is it really that simple?" The answer is a resounding yes! But there is a caveat - the quality of the outcome is directly dependent on the quality of the input. In other words, "Garbage in, garbage out." The secret to getting the best out of AI is in asking the right questions. It's about being clear, concise, and specific. The more information you feed the AI, the better the results it can produce. In my journey with AI, I've realized that it's more than just a tool. It's like having an additional brain that is tirelessly working, processing, and analyzing data. It's my co-pilot in the journey of academic content development, making it less overwhelming and more efficient. AI can't replace human creativity or intuition, but it can undoubtedly assist us in our academic endeavors. It can free up our mental bandwidth, allowing us to focus on what truly matters - creating, innovating, and pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. To all the students, educators, and researchers out there, I encourage you to embrace AI in your academic journey. Remember, it's not about replacing the human mind; it's about augmenting it.
