Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) ’s global support unit and IOM Regional Data Hub (EHSA)—East, Horn, and Southern Africa—are hosting a four-day regional training in Kenya from 25 to June 28 2024. Yesterday was day three of the training, and the focus was on Flow Monitoring optimisation, its objective and envisioned outcome—to generate quality data on migration flows and population sub-groups of interest—and modelling sampling approaches. We followed with the afternoon sessions on better understanding the upcoming large-scale data initiatives launched in the East and Horn of Africa, presenting the latest DTM global standards and knowledge management resources available to DTM operations, and a dedicated discussion on climate analysis. Today, day four is well underway, and there is much to do. We’ll check in again with the highlights and closing wrap-up. In the meantime, for more on engagements, events, other areas of training and publications, follow IOM’s RDH EHSA LinkedIn Page: https://lnkd.in/gPK97Mde #Data4Action

In recent years, anticipatory action has made great advances in response to droughts, floods, typhoons, etc. The approach has recently gained further momentum with the UN Secretary General launching the Early Warning for All action plan in 2022, which aims to ensure that every person in the world is covered by early warning systems by 2027. When it comes to responding to conflict hazards – such as conflict-induced displacement – progress on anticipatory action has so far been meager – both due to the challenging contexts but also due to the lack of forecasting tool to accurately predict future shocks. As such, the expected benefits of anticipatory action have only to a limited extent being extended to conflict- and displacement-affected populations. On October 18 we are bringing together an exciting group of experts to discuss prediction of conflict and displacement for anticipatory action at the upcoming #Data4Peace 2023 Conference organized by NYU Center on International Cooperation The purpose of this session is to highlight the current state of forecasting conflict and displacement and the opportunities and challenges for using such forecasting for anticipatory action. With this focus, the aim is to charter a course for expanding – where feasible – anticipatory action as response to conflict and conflict- induced displacement Branka Panic Isabelle Arradon Katayoun Kishi

Over the past 10 years, the number of internally displaced people (IDP) has more than doubled, from 33 million to 71 million. They are now in half of all the countries in the world, often driven to move because of the impact of climate change, conflict and other disruptions and hardships. Anticipating potential displacement is a key aspect of preventing it, and doing so is a top priority for IOM. See below our latest report PROGRESS, Periodic Global Report on the State of Solutions to Internal Displacement ⬇ ⬇ ⬇
"Our findings are shifting the debate from ‘when does displacement end’ to ‘when do solutions start'. Together with the communities we serve, IOM is committed to leave no one behind in the quest for a sustainable, resilient future. PROGRESS shows us where investments can be made for effective solutions, which match what IDPs also tell us: adequate housing, livelihoods, and local integration in situations when displacement persists.” - Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General for Operations, after the launch of the 'Periodic Global Report on the State of Solutions to Internal Displacement' published by the International Organization for Migration Global Data Institute (GDI) in partnership with Georgetown University.

🤝 In December 2023, M4D - Multimodal Data Fusion and Analytics Group researchers together with the Prefecture of Central Greece officials successfully organised the first Greek Community of Practice (CoP) of the ClimEmpower project, in the premises of the latter, in Lamia. Local stakeholders stemming from the quadruple helix participated and contributed with knowledge on the status of the climate risks faced by the prefecture and ideas on how to address the challenges posed by these risks. 🌦 ClimEmpower aims to bring together 14 organizations with a common mission to empower five South-European regions (Andalusia, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece and Sicily) facing high climate change (CC) risk and exceptionally low adaptive capacity to enhance their CC resilience. Our aim is to enhance their CC resilience by establishing regional Communities of Practice (CoP) and co-creating resilient development strategies tailored to the specific needs and potentials of each region. 📌 M4D - Multimodal Data Fusion and Analytics Group - Multimedia Knowledge and Social Media Analytics Laboratory - MKLab, which is a part of Information Technologies Institute (ITI) of Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), is a project partner and a Case Study Facilitator responsible for developing a methodology to close data gaps in global, European, regional and local datasets to be used in user-centric applications which will be tested and validated in regional trials. 🖱 For more news and updates, you can visit the project site - https://climempower.eu/ #climempower #eu #horizonproject #resilientcommunities #climatechange #sustainability

Webinar! International Financial Institutions (IFIs) are increasingly realising the potential use of #EO for monitoring and evaluation (M&E). However, it is an area that is still not fully understood. To address this gap, #GDA published a topical overview under the Monitoring & Evaluation and Impact Assessment activity, looking at the value of EO for M&E by IFIs. Join Imperative Space and Caribou Space for a webinar that aims to promote the use of #EO in M&E by IFIs. The webinar will demonstrate the significant role M&E plays in development interventions, as well as showcasing the value that EO data brings to M&E. We will be joined by an expert panel of speakers Alex Chunet, Bernhard Metz & Robert Marty from The World Bank and Christoph Aubrecht from European Space Agency - ESA More information and registration here – 19th October 15:00 (CET) https://lnkd.in/eebZiWyK #AcceleratingImpact

Earth Observations Data Cubes integrated with In-Situ data can go a long way to monitor and report on official statistics SDG indicators. Partnership and collaboration with international Big EO data providers, Space Agencies and the National Statistcs Offices are key to make this happen. After some testing and fine tuning, finally an operational tool, EOSTAT, is now up and running in Lesotho to measure the Mountain Green Cover Index and other environmental and agricultural indicators. Many thanks to EO4SDG initiative of GEO for awarding the SDG award 2023 to the EOSTAT project implemented by the Bureau of Statistics in Lesotho with support from FAO, GIZ, the European Union, the Government of Lesotho under the Renoka initiative.
