Since OpenAI first released ChatGPT to the public about a year and a half ago, legal community stakeholders have been thinking about what generative AI means for the practice of law – and in particular about how to use the new technology ethically. In California, both the State Bar and the Legislature are putting forward potential approaches: the State Bar with its initial guidance on lawyers’ use of generative AI, and the Legislature with the proposed bill AB 2811. We spoke with Brad Hise about his responsibility at Hanson Bridgett LLP for developing ethical policies and procedures at the firm regarding generative AI. The global market for conversational AI was valued at $9.3 billion in 2021 but with the rising interest in conversational AI platforms like ChatGPT and Bard, the market is forecast to reach $95.3 billion by 2030 at a growth rate of 23.6% per annum.
