Deforested wild land (most of Scotland) is becoming a valuable asset for generating carbon offsets. Remote corporate investors [‘Green Lairds’] may buy and exploit large tracts of Scotland for private profit, shutting out local communities and permanently industrialising our most sensitive landscapes. What to do about it? It's not easy, but the SCDI's ‘Natural Capital’ report is an informed and realistic contribution for investors, communities and like-minded partners. https://lnkd.in/eNEfjrPS #carbonoffset #communityland #scotland

Exciting news, $100 billion of investment money for green banks starting to be moved via the US Inflation Reduction Act: "The EPA is awarding money to eight nonprofits, which have committed to leverage nearly $7 in private capital for every $1 of federal investment. The nonprofits have also pledged to ensure that at least 70 percent of the funds will benefit disadvantaged communities, and that the financed projects will reduce up to 40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide a year — equivalent to the annual emissions of nearly 9 million gasoline-powered cars." https://lnkd.in/eWcqjbxU

REPORT 📔 | The Resilient Communities Fund got emergency support to community businesses at pace, implementing energy resilience projects in response to climate change and the cost-of-living crisis. The evaluation report by New Local shows that: 1️⃣ Community businesses are at the forefront of addressing the local impacts of the #climatecrisis. They deliver energy efficiency improvements, support local people with the climate crisis's impacts, and implement sustainable practices. The fund has helped safeguard local business, protect jobs and services, and build financial headroom. 2️⃣ The flexibility and simplicity of the fund was critical to its success and impact. This empowered community businesses, freeing them up from funding restrictions and day-to-day challenges and allowing them to tackle immediate pressures and plan for longer-term resilience. 3️⃣ Community businesses and the communities they support, are highly susceptible and exposed to climate change. They need flexible financial support& technical bespoke advice to build towards environmental sustainability. Ensuring high-integrity Nature-based Solutions projects is doable if the correct steps are taken. Here Nicci Mander highlights three fundamental steps for success and takes us through some of their processes.
Nature For Justice has engaged with hundreds of nonprofits, civil society groups, businesses, and communities of faith who work at the local level, most of whom have reached out to us to learn about Nature-based Solutions (NbS). https://bit.ly/47enYhI is the N4J Communities and Project Integrity blog by the Director of our NbS Africa Program, (Nicci) Nicola Mander. It describes the three elements of our approach: project selection, partner evaluation, and partner skill building. We see our role as working with local organizations to develop successful nature-based projects that meaningfully and permanently improve climate resilience for local people alongside making a contribution toward containing global warming. While this assurance of project success is also what our investors and funders look for, we also recognize that it is local communities that suffer the most if a project fails. A project that only brings carbon revenues to local beneficiaries without using carbon finance as a catalyst for positive, context-sensitive social-ecological systems change will not have long-term durability and therefore lacks integrity. This means a central need for projects to unlock meaningful and permanent improvements in financial revenue for smallholder farmers and/or communities and generate a tangible reduction in their exposure to climate-related threats, such as food, water, and energy security. Have a look at the blog https://bit.ly/47enYhI and you’ll see the three elements of project delivery capacity we evaluate and the seven considerations for organizational strength. Thanks Nicci! What are we missing? Pls let us know if you would add/edit/drop any of our ten core elements. We are always striving to improve.
