EGLE has installed the first air monitor in Michigan’s western Upper Peninsula, located in Negaunee Township. This site will play a crucial role in measuring PM2.5, a fine particulate pollutant that poses significant health risks. With wildfire smoke from across the country impacting air quality, this new monitor provides real-time data that residents can access to make informed decisions about outdoor activities. The site was chosen for its strategic location in Marquette County, which is the most populated area in the UP. The monitor, funded by a federal grant through the American Rescue Plan Act, joins over 40 others across Michigan, but it's the first of its kind in this region. This addition will greatly enhance our understanding of air quality in the UP, especially during wildfire season.
