EVs—specifically Teslas—are showing quality issues all around A quality study from automotive research firm J.D. Power found that car owners are annoyed with incidents such as false warnings from their vehicle's tech systems and disappointed with controls and displays that get even simple functions wrong. Across the study's categories (infotainment, driving assistance, powertrain, driving experience, and more), researchers specifically called out EVs for their problem-riddled systems. “Owners of cutting edge, tech-filled battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are experiencing problems that are of a severity level high enough for them to take their new vehicle into the dealership at a rate three times higher than that of gas-powered vehicle owners,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power. J.D. Power's take goes against the usual perspective on EVs, which is that they require fewer repairs since they don't have as many parts and systems as gas-powered vehicles. Are Hybrids More Reliable Than ICE Vehicles?: The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is on the rise, yet they face challenges regarding reliability. Consumer Reports' 2023 Annual Auto Reliability Survey reveals that, on average, new EVs present 79 percent more problems than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Electric pickups are particularly less reliable, marking the least reliable vehicle category. #car #cars #awesome

Consumer Reports: Electric vehicles have proved far less reliable, on average, than gasoline-powered cars, trucks and SUVs. EVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years encountered nearly 80% more problems than did ICE vehicles. Consumer Reports said EV owners most frequently reported troubles with battery and charging systems as well as flaws in how the vehicles’ body panels and interior parts fit together. https://lnkd.in/g-BdJiHk

EV and hybrid vehicle reliability may still be lower than traditional ICE vehicles, but there is some good news for hybrid owners. According to a recent study, hybrid vehicles have less powertrain issues than their traditional counterparts. With auto technology evolving at breakneck speeds, it's more important than ever to ensure quality processes are updated and up to par. Link to the source: https://lnkd.in/duszCVQu

The world of EVs and PHEVs is still a young one, and we saw real evidence of that today. A comprehensive study from Consumer Reports found that PHEVs and EVs had a significantly higher incidence of issues than ICE or Hybrid vehicles did. While EVs were 146% less reliable than ICE vehicles and PHEVs 79% worse, hybrid vehicles took the prize for most reliable vehicles. A hybrid vehicle had 26% less issues than an ICE, not a result I expected. EV trucks were the worst offenders, followed by SUVs and then cars. The reality is this segment is still so new there's a lot of teething problems. But, if you can deal with the teaching problems, an EV or PHEV is still worth the buy. https://lnkd.in/gPSG3umw #electricvehicles #evs

As an electric vehicle owner, and gas-hybrid owner just before it, I have been thinking a lot about this trend and my mind wanders towards the composable/headless DXP industry for analogies. Is headless akin to being fully electric in a vehicle? Is hybrid headless like the gas hybrid vehicle? When I mad libs this first sentence in the article with terms from our industry, does it also ring true at all: "As automakers (platform/product vendors?) push their flashy new electric vehicles (headless/composable offerings?), many consumers making the jump from gasoline cars (monolith, tradition DXPs?) are opting instead for hybrids (hybrid headless?) as they tiptoe toward electrification (fully headless/composable?)." https://lnkd.in/eHzs3FNf

Let's hang out at the charging station, while the software sorts itself out. Electric vehicles have been dinged on driving distance, charging times and high costs among others. In fact, owners of EVs reported issues with their vehicles at a significantly higher rate than traditional combustion cars. But the gremlin in EVs may have more to do with the software than anything else. It's biggest selling point may also be its biggest Achilles heel. EVs are touted for their low maintenance needs compared to gasoline cars. You take oil changes, grime buildup, and complex engines out of the equation, and it sounds like a dream, right? But, EVs are essentially advanced computers on wheels, and that's where the problem begins. EVs aren't the only ones. Think about it. Whether we're talking about EVs or gasoline cars, they're all loaded to the gills with technology. Chances are most of us have barely scratched the surface on the dials and doohickeys that automakers pack into vehicles to jack up prices for consumers. The worst part comes when even getting that basic functions to work becomes a huge technical pain. Seriously, something as simple sounding as mirroring your smartphone and keeping it connected can lead one down an unhappy, unnamed street. I'd like the basic AM/FM radio, please. Infotainment...if there was ever a word created by a marketer, this is it. Sometimes poorly designed, these systems are a technological potpourri full of apps from the automaker that you likely won't ever use. But, it's also the central hub for connecting your phone to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. When these systems, they can be great. When they don't, pulling out that old Volkswagen Bug from the garage feels therapeutic. Is it really helpful if I don't understand those warning messages? We've all seen them...the phantom warning light. Whether you're low on oil or something invisible is mysteriously parked in your backseat, those warning lights can be as annoying and disconcerting as random message pings in the night. So, yes, EVs have problems as does every car. In this case, however, the concerns by consumers have more do with poor user experience related to the software. That's something that automakers should and need to address...EV or gas https://lnkd.in/gmgp-_J9 #electricvehicle #technology #automotiveindustry #jdpower #consumers #userexperience #infotainment
