It was beautiful to see Chicago’s young people committing themselves to public service and demonstrating a desire to better our city at the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation and Laborers' Local 1001 Laborers Trainee Program Celebration last week. This program creates a pipeline from high school to a stable and rewarding union job, and is a shining example of the kinds of opportunities we are building and scaling up for young people throughout the city.

Chicago is officially the first city in the U.S. outside of Park City, Utah to host an independent film weekend in partnership with the Sundance Institute. This welcomed addition to our city brought an exciting lineup of screenings, events, and year-round film programming championing creative independence. I look forward to the Sundance Institute returning to Chicago in the future!

July 1st is now “Paid Time Off Day” in Chicago! Today, every worker in our city is guaranteed a week of paid vacation days and sick days, and the minimum wage increases to $16.20/hr. This will not only protect our economy, but increase the quality of life for workers across the city. Chicago is what it is today because of our acceptance and our diversity. I am proud that my administration reflects all that is beautiful about our city, all while living their truths and being authentically themselves inside and out of City Hall. Happy Pride!

We are making Chicago the most pro-worker city in the country. Starting next week, the City’s minimum wage rises to $16.20/hour, and the One Fair Wage Ordinance and the Paid Time Off Ordinance go into effect. This is the result of a movement made up of workers, labor unions, community organizations and advocates who want to see workers respected, protected, and empowered. These protections will ensure that workers can balance their lives and their livelihoods, creating stability for them and their families.

For Pride week, we are raising our brand new Chicago Stars Pride Flag alongside the Cook County Progress Pride Flag, and reaffirming our city as a place where everyone is welcome and love conquers all.

Happy Pride week, Chicago! What started as protest, and acts of resistance in the fight for equal rights, acceptance, safety, marriage rights and more, has blossomed into a celebration of resilience, equality and progress, and all the joy that our LGBTQ+ community has to offer.
