Earlier this week as I wrapped a trip to China I made a special visit to one of my favorite global cities - Hong Kong. The University of Chicago has a spectacular campus here which is home to our Asia executive MBA program and study abroad program for undergraduates. The UChicago Yuen campus, opened in 2018, is a 50,000 sqft building located on the cliffs of the South China Sea in a converted heritage building. The facility is absolutely breathtaking and I’m looking forward to doing more here with its executive director Mark Barnekow to focus on innovation and entrepreneurship - especially given the university has over 1,700 Chinese students on campus in Chicago who are vital members of our UChicago global community. A distinguishing aspect of UChicago is our global presence, with centers or campuses in London, Paris, Delhi, Beijing and Hong Kong. To be competitive in innovation & entrepreneurship today, companies must understand the global landscape. There’s no better way to do this than to offer a physical presence in 3 continents and an alumni network that’s 180,000 members strong across the world. I always encourage startups to be open to markets outside the US based on their team, technology, and go-to-market strategy. In my early startup days we built deep partnerships in Asia before returning to grow in the US. The experience in Asia made us much more aware of scaled global players with whom we had to compete. Looking forward to returning to Hong Kong with new ideas for cross border collaboration.
Hey Samir, glad you made the trip. Let me know (while HK is fresh in mind) if you have ideas on how we can help UChicago/Chicagoland startups find partnerships in HK.
Sounds like a great experience. Love to see how UChicago Medicine can work with you to identify startups to support our services.
Great update on your trip Samir! Keep up the leadership for our ecosystem. @GlobalCoachTom via Insta/Twitter
It's such a gorgeous campus! Here's my favorite shot from my time there during the EMBA last fall. Amazing.
Way to go!
