📚🚀 #paperFriday 🚀📚 We are thrilled to announce the publication of the paper"Balancing Variety and Quality: Examining the Impact of Benefit-Linked Cross-Subsidization on Multisided Platforms" by our #CoDE member Mahdi Tavalaei, #CoDEdirector Prof. Annabelle Gawer, and Juan Santaló. The paper explores how a specific cross-subsidizing pricing strategy can balance the variety and quality of complementors on multisided platforms. Using data from the airport industry, they show that airports subsidizing airlines based on revenue can boost financial performance while maintaining quality traffic. AIFA supports the burgeoning efforts of UK-based #startups, led by AIFA secretary Botty Dimanov, PhD, to halt the #TENU framework, which would see #universities take a 10% stake as well continuous #royalties from spinouts. 👉 Such a policy would have disastrous effects. It would result in #academic #founders with no experience in the #startup world being heavily diluted from the outset, significantly decreasing their chances of raising multiple rounds of #venturecapital, and thus eventually killing lots of promising tech (a problem already observed by many in the #VC world). Such a framework would only lead to an increase in the number of what we term #optouts: startups that specifically seek to avoid any and all links to universities.

Reflecting on an interesting London Tech Week, it's clear that the UK remains a powerhouse for innovation and business growth. Whilst the topic of AI continues to dominate many discussions, the events of the week and subsequent discussions have highlighted to me the importance of ongoing support for entrepreneurs. This is a subject that is close to my heart having started and grown multiple companies, and various teams. Key takeaways on this subject include: 🏫 EDUCATION & TRAINING: Integrate comprehensive entrepreneurial education across all levels, with practical training and industry partnerships. 💳 ACCESS TO FUNDING: Expand government grants, venture capital networks, and leverage crowdfunding platforms to facilitate capital access. 📜 SUPPORTIVE POLICIES: Streamline business registration, provide tax incentives, and ensure flexible employment laws to foster a business-friendly environment. 💡 CULTURE OF INNOVATION: Promote networking, mentorship programs, and public-private partnerships to drive innovation and showcase success stories. Empowering entrepreneurship requires a collective effort from government, educational institutions, and the private sector. With the right collaboration and strategies, the UK is well-positioned achieve it's goals and to maintain its status as one of the leaders in global innovation. Thoughts? #LTW #technology #innovation

academyEX is both a graduate institute for professionals and a learning and development course content development lab for multiple organisations, including the New Zealand Government. One of our most ambitious and most impactful projects was the launch of Digital Boost NZ in partnership with MBIE back in 2021. This learning platform has helped educate over 65,000 SME's on how to build their businesses through digital tools, e-commerce, social media and cloud-based services. Since its launch, independent research has reinforced just how impactful the video-based learning and live online sessions have been in helping build the SME economy. This article delves into how we created the platform, the impact it has, and how a robust private-public partnership can positively build the New Zealand economy. We have loved the journey of working with small and medium businesses across the country as they embrace new ways to build business success. Free resources such as Digital Boost NZ is a great way to keep an economy moving forward, while building the skills for the digital future #learninganddevelopment #academyEX #smes #smallbusinesssupport

#ICYMI: In today’s The Wall Street Journal, Engine’s Nathan Lindfors underscores the importance of trade policy that lowers barriers for US startups. Unfortunately, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has recently withdrawn support for such policies, including around data flows & data localization. https://lnkd.in/g3uRC5zA Startups rely on smart digital trade rules that facilitate critical data flows underpinning their ability to compete abroad on a level playing field. Restrictions on how and when data can be transferred across borders increases costs and can cause startups to lose opportunities. That’s why Engine recently sent a letter to USTR highlighting the experiences of startups, underscoring the importance of strong digital trade policies that support them, and encouraging USTR to reverse course. https://bit.ly/475fxEU We’re also holding a seminar for #startup founders next month to learn more about these recent events and what they mean for their companies. Founders can RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/ge-9Mjrr
