In the nearly 45 years since industrial employment peaked in the United States, manufacturers have struggled to regain their prominence. Now, they have some wind at their back. With the exception of the COVID-19 period, U.S. manufacturing jobs have risen steadily from 2010 through early 2024. As of February, the manufacturing sector accounted for about 13 million American workers, a gain of more than 1.5 million from February 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many organizations still think in terms of documents and files, which aren’t suitable for traceability and maintaining a cohesive digital thread. Instead, data should "leave" the confines of files in which it’s often buried, and transition to a data-node-based management system. This approach uses nodes that include metadata and relationships, providing a more flexible and interconnected framework for managing product data. The goal is to create a collection of contextualized and traceable product data that improves transparency for all stakeholders, including the customer. The quality discipline has always evolved in the context of technology, and like technology, it is evolving still. As Industry 4.0 builds on the technical innovations that came before it, Quality 4.0 builds on traditional quality management principles and best practices, such as standardization, continuous improvement, and total quality management. Whereas Industry 3.0 was characterized by digitization, or moving from physical information formats to digital ones, Industry 4.0 marks an era of “digitalization,” which utilizes integrated systems, connectivity, and vast data sets to enable real-time visibility into processes, data-driven decision-making, and collaboration across the value chain by removing silos within and beyond the organization. In Quality 4.0, these technical innovations enable predictive quality management, real-time monitoring, increased standardization, and supplier quality assurance. Importantly, they also enable workers to focus on higher order tasks, improve decision making, and create stronger feedback loops. Though it’s still an evolving concept, the digital thread builds on digital twin technology to connect granular, digital data about engineering and product design, plant floor equipment, manufacturing operations, supply chain processes and service histories. These data already exist in paper-based work instructions or tucked away in core enterprise systems like MES (manufacturing execution system), ERP (enterprise resources planning), and PLM (product lifecycle management). The goal of the digital thread is to provide the connective tissue and universal data access so that all workers—from plant floor operators to field support specialists—operate from the most current and relevant playbook.
