Yesterday was a great day for BRIDGE and the vibrant Fruitvale neighborhood of Oakland, where we officially opened 181 units of affordable housing in the beautiful Casa Sueños development.
Delivered in partnership with The Unity Council, Casa Sueños is the third phase of the nationally recognized Fruitvale Village Transit District in one of the largest Latino neighborhoods in the Bay Area. BRIDGE now has 10 affordable housing communities in Oakland, with nearly 1,200 affordable units.
On-hand to celebrate the occasion was a long list of dignitaries and partners, including our President and CEO Ken Lombard, The Unity Council CEO Chris Iglesias, Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo, Oakland Housing Authority Executive Director Patricia Wells, Oakland Housing and Community Development Director Emily Weinstein, and many others including residents and community members! We were delighted to have a strong showing by the BRIDGE team as well.
Casa Sueños provides a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, along with support services. Forty-six units are reserved for residents who have previously experienced homelessness, and another 29 apartments are available through vouchers from the Oakland Housing Authority. Affordable ground-floor commercial space is occupied by Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice (CURYJ), an Oakland-based nonprofit focused on ending youth criminalization and mass incarceration.
Thank you to one and all for an unforgettable day as we continue to improve access to affordable housing on the West Coast.
