Norman Rockwell might be one of the reasons I'm in marketing. He had an unparalleled ability to tell a story in a single image. He captured emotion brilliantly and was able to evoke emotion in viewers. Norman was an impeccable craftsman and his work crosses the line from illustration to fine art and back. I recently got a chance to visit the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA to be inspired and pay respects to a childhood hero. He's buried in a hard to find spot in cemetery far from the museum. I was moved to find that on his modest headstone, people left tubes of paint, brushes, charcoal and other instruments of art! All for an artist who continues to inspire other artists, illustrators, storytellers and at least one marketer! Norman Rockwell Museum

Norman Rockwell has been my life long hero. I actually did a project with him early in my career for Crest toothpaste. I used to call him at his home and we would speak for long periods of time. He sent me a signed print of Stockbridge saying “ To my good friend Mal Karlin.” Signed: by Norman Rockwell. He also wrote me a letter about the young boy with freckles he wanted to use in his painting. Both hanging in my house. I visited the museum many times.

Good stuff! My parents collected his lithos and figurines. We visited this museum in the early 80s. Funny how we’ve never talked about him.

Brad, I visited the Norman Rockwell museum for the first time earlier this year and I also was moved by his art and fine craftsmanship.

Nice! I also love that museum. It was there that I got a sense of his mastery and started to appreciate him as an American icon and not just a meme.

A great artist…and unlnown to many, an ad guy, painting art for Kelllog’s (I think) cereal boxes. And that’s a great little museum.

I love this! I still have 20 of his Christmas plates my Grandma gave me every year growing up. He inspired me to go into advertising, too!
