The European #DAOWorkshop (DAWO), organized by the Institute for Organizational Viability (IOV), explores the challenges and opportunities of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). The first DAWO took place on July 4th and 5th 2024 at ZHAW in Winterthur, featuring contributions from an international academic audience. The event additionally featured four thematic workshops on 1) #DAOs and #DeFi, 2) #DAOs and #AI, 3) #LegalAspects of #DAOs, and 4) #DAOs and #CommunityManagement. Further the workshop presented 11 peer-reviewed #papers and 14 #abstracts, fostering collaborative research opportunities. #DAWO24 highlighted DAOs as a unique organizational phenomenon, encouraging #interdisciplinary research from legal, technical, economic, social, and philosophical perspectives. Hence, the event promoted collaborative research opportunities, contributing to the advancement of #blockchain #research and applications focusing on DAOs.

Last week, I had the chance to attend two #women #panels organized by Web3 Foundation, DLNews & APCO. Sharing some of the insights : 1️⃣ Panel on Blockchain & the Future of Democracy with Ioana S., Dr. Clara Guerra, Nathalie Boyke & Dr Agata Ferreira. The debate on Blockchain & the Future of Democracy highlighted the role of blockchain in introducing #transparency, #empowering people, ensuring a #resilient and aiming for a politically neutral system that's censorship-resistant. Panelists discussed the challenges of fundraising for NGOs, the control of money by the banking system, and the necessity for frameworks that combat money laundering while leveraging blockchain for #public #good. Dr Agata Ferreira : "Democracy is something that is never earned" 2️⃣ Panel on Blockchain & Sustainability with Lena Klaaßen, Inbar Preiss, Belen Suarez Lopez, Mariana de la Roche Wills & Veronica Manfredi The Blockchain & Sustainability panel focused on the ecological impacts of blockchain technology, emphasizing the need for #sustainable #initiatives from the project's #inception. It delved into the complexities of measuring the ecological footprint, considering the network size and hardware used. Despite the #lack of concrete #statistics & #methodology for #reporting, the discussion underscored the importance of strategic thinking and data in #balancing #resource trade-offs against #added #value. 👉 Both panels agreed on the transformative potential of blockchain, urging careful #consideration of its #application to foster a more democratic, sustainable future. We are pleased to share one of our recent publications, authored by Sandra Uwantege Hart for the International Journal of #DisasterRiskReduction.   Titled, "From Promise to Practice: A cross-institutional analysis of design trends, enablers and challenges in blockchain-enabled cash and voucher delivery," this publication analyses blockchain-enabled cash and voucher delivery in humanitarian programs through a cross-institutional study of six pilot projects across four countries. Applying human-centred design theory and a case study method, it identifies obstacles to innovation and scalability, proposing a framework for comparative analysis and emphasizing the importance of design, context, and stakeholder engagement for successful implementation. The findings aim to guide practitioners, private sector actors, and researchers, urging continued research to validate and expand blockchain use in humanitarian efforts while emphasizing ethical standards.   Sandra is a Strategist, Inclusive Innovation & Humanitarian Action at PoliSync Centre for International Policy Engagement.
