Highlights 💡 Dr. Tom Eisenmann discusses the importance of studying failed startups and the lessons that can be learned from them. 💡 Jibo, a robot startup, serves as a case study for startup failure, highlighting challenges such as delays, technical difficulties, and competition from established companies. 💡 Six patterns of failure are identified: false starts, dysfunctional relationships, false positives, late-stage speed traps, help wanted, and cascading miracles. 💡 Founders are advised to prioritize customer discovery and understand the differences between early adopter and mainstream needs. 💡 Learning from failure and maintaining humility can lead to future success in entrepreneurship.

"This is a 'MOMENT' for entrepreneurs. Take advantage! And think bigger and bolder!" That was my rallying cry today to the "Entrepreneurship & Strategy" course at University of Cincinnati Carl H. Lindner College of Business. In an era where #GenerativeAI is disrupting the landscape of startup development, the opportunities are boundless. This technology enables us to refine ideas, test, measure, iterate, and design minimally viable products at unprecedentedly low costs and mind-boggling speed. It's a breakthrough, I noted, that doesn't replace the essential skills of business acumen or strategic judgment but significantly amplifies their impact. The winners will be those who masterfully integrate Generative AI with traditional business and brand building savvy, full stop. What is valorisation of research? To me it means the translation of research into societal impact. Knowledge is only potential impact that manifests if people bring it to society. When they really make it happen. And making it happen, especially when it’s innovative, means sticking out your necks and developing markets. Inviting for criticism. Just launching your ideas. In order to successfully develop and prepare markets you need a ‘product market fit’. While researchers are especially focusing on the first part, the technology, the market needs to be ready to buy it. The market readiness level (MRL) also needs to be there. For us, this ‘TRL-MRL connection’ has been the biggest challenge and focus. This is where the true impact is. Once you understand it for your specific business, magic can happen. Today, I had the distinct honor of moderating a forum titled "Innovation for a Sustainable and Resilient Future". This event, organized by Project Pascal and Raffles Institution's Medallist Students, featured our esteemed guest, Emeritus Professor Wong Poh Kam from NUS Business School and LKY School of Public Policies. As a Data Science advisor to Project Pascal, my aim of this forum was to connect students with the venture capitalist and entrepreneur communities. Our goal is to inspire students to consider joining startups, many of which, despite receiving strong financial support from venture capitalists, are experiencing a shortage of talented and skilled workers that could bolster their chances of success. To the broader public, Professor Wong is celebrated for his outstanding academic achievements and his prowess as an entrepreneur. For those lucky enough to have been his students, he is a beacon of wisdom, shedding light on the way forward for countless individuals over the years. I personally regard it as a blessing to have been under his guidance during my MBA at NUS Business School. In our forum, we delved into topics such as: 1. Utilizing Technology Innovations to Address Challenges and Foster Positive Change 2. The Role of Start-ups as Catalysts for Innovation in the Tech Sphere 3. Merging Sustainability and Innovation to Combat Climate Change Two key takeaways for me revolve around the mindset of all team members and the agility of decision-makers in uncertain environments to truly make a mark. When it comes to joining startups, possessing an entrepreneurial mindset takes precedence over technical skill sets. In a fast-paced startup world, decision-makers must be adept at making swift, risk-assessed choices in ambiguous situations, learning from outcomes, and iterating accordingly. The adage, "Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible" is important in research. Advancement in knowledge & understanding relies on the willingness of researchers to explore uncharted territories, challenge existing theories, and question established beliefs. Breakthroughs are often born out of innovative thinking and the courage to diverge from conventional methodologies. Embracing this principle allows for the discovery of new insights, alternative solutions, and paradigm shifts. From Academic Achievement to Entrepreneurial Insight During my master's thesis, I created an algorithm with a 90% accuracy rate in predicting Kickstarter campaign outcomes. My university advisor encouraged me to transform this academic project into a startup venture with two co-founders. Our data-driven approach showed great promise but overlooked a crucial element: customer feedback. Without it, we couldn't tailor our product to market needs, leading to our eventual failure. This experience was a humbling reminder that successful innovation isn't just about technology; it's about understanding and responding to customer needs. This journey has been a powerful lesson in the importance of adaptability and the value of listening to your market. If you know me, you will know that I live and breathe entrepreneurship. I'm very passionate about contributing to the creation of the next wave of entrepreneurs especially within the HE sector. I'm a mixture of an academic and practice entrepreneur and do strongly believe in entrepreneurship as a practice... And then you are fortunate to work for a university like Arden University and her leaders like Professor Dilshad Sheikh, CMBE, CMgr CCMI Elizabeth Ellis Dr Alison Watson, CMktr, CMgr, PFHEA, FIOEE Dr Syed Ali Tarek who give you the space and resources to do what you truly love and lead on the development and launch of projects like the Arden Enterprise Incubator (AEI), which seeks to discover, develop and deploy the entrepreneurial talents of our students. As we count down to the official launch of the AEI for our current and past students, I would love to share with you a snippet of the sort of the resources, the team and I have been working on. This very short video is on the character trait of an entrepreneur and Arden being a digital first university we have used AI to bring some of our contents on the AEI alive. The character in this video (a mini me ���� ) and voice (an cloned version of mine) is made possible by the use of AI. At Arden, we do share some, if not all of the concerns people have about AI but do also think that it could be wisely used to effectively deliver contents to our audience who are mostly tech savvy students. Amongst many activities, we will be having our first inter university rocket pitch competition in December, 2023, where our students will compete with other students at a different UK university for a prize. We aim to do more of this.
